You may be able to foster a cat with a contagious disease even if you have pets, but the safe plan depends on the suspected disease, the cat’s exposure and vaccination history, and whether your home can keep animals apart. Before the cat arrives, agree on an isolation and cleaning plan with the rescue and its veterinarian, and make sure you know whom to contact if the cat’s condition changes.
Get the care plan before the cat comes home
Ask the rescue to explain what is known, what is only suspected, and what you are expected to do. HumanePro recommends written foster protocols, accessible medical contacts, and clear instructions about signs that need immediate veterinary attention.
- Diagnosis or working suspicion: Ask which disease is suspected and what information supports that assessment. Symptoms alone may not identify the cause.
- Separation: Confirm which animals must be kept apart, what contact is allowed, and how long precautions should continue. Do not assume one quarantine period applies to every infection.
- Cleaning: Get instructions for the specific disease, surfaces, supplies, and any cleaning product the rescue expects you to use.
- Monitoring: Ask what changes to watch for and how the rescue wants you to record or report them.
- Contacts: Save the rescue’s regular and after-hours contact details, and clarify which person or clinic to call if the cat worsens.
Also ask what the rescue will provide and what you need to supply. A clear plan is more useful than buying equipment before you know the case’s containment requirements.
Can you foster the cat if you have other pets?
Sometimes. The deciding question is whether you can follow the precautions for this particular cat—not simply whether another cat lives in your home. Consider the suspected disease and how it spreads, each animal’s vaccination and exposure status, whether you can maintain physical separation, and whether you can clean the room and its supplies as required. Also discuss how the separation will affect the foster cat’s welfare and how quickly you can reach veterinary help.

UW–Madison’s shelter-medicine guidance, for example, says a home with resident cats that have feline herpesvirus does not automatically have to be ruled out for kittens; it describes placement with basic precautions in that respiratory-disease context. That example is not a general clearance for other infections. If you cannot reliably separate animals or carry out the agreed precautions, tell the rescue before accepting the placement so it can consider another foster arrangement.
Set up a separate, cleanable space
Choose a dedicated area that fits the rescue veterinarian’s instructions and can be thoroughly cleaned. Nonporous surfaces are easier to disinfect than materials that absorb contamination. UW–Madison’s panleukopenia guidance specifically says a quarantine space for that disease must be thoroughly cleanable; carpet, furniture, wood, and grass are not suitable surfaces for that purpose.

A washable cat exercise pen or playpen may help create a defined foster area, and washable bedding can simplify routine laundry. A pen is only appropriate if it meets the case-specific containment and cleaning plan; it is not automatically adequate for strict quarantine. HumanePro notes that baby pools and pet exercise pens can be creative holding options, particularly for young animals, while cautioning that sanitation in foster settings can be more challenging. Ask the veterinarian before relying on either setup.
Keep the foster cat’s supplies dedicated to that area. Before using a disinfectant, remove visible organic material, then follow the product label and the veterinarian’s disease-specific protocol. Do not assume a general household cleaning routine—or a particular product or dilution—will work for every pathogen. HumanePro also recommends routine washing and machine-drying of bedding.

How to handle a suspected ringworm case
Ringworm can be transmitted to people and other animals, so it is reasonable to ask the rescue how to reduce contact and what cleaning precautions to use. A suspected case needs an assessment and coordinated plan rather than a guess based on appearance. UW–Madison describes possible signs such as focal hair loss, scaling, or crusting, often on the face, ears, feet, or tail. Its diagnostic guidance considers history and clinical signs alongside tools such as Wood’s lamp examination and microscopic examination of hair.
Testing and visible signs need interpretation in context: UW–Madison notes that false positives can lead to unnecessary treatment and prolonged stays, while false negatives can allow spread. Let the rescue veterinarian interpret findings and set the plan for the cat and household.

Monitor the cat and report changes promptly
Observe the cat as often as the rescue directs, and keep notes in the format it requests. Contact the rescue or veterinarian promptly if symptoms worsen or new signs appear. If the plan identifies a sign as requiring immediate attention, use the designated urgent contact rather than waiting for a routine check-in. Do not start, stop, or change treatment on your own; ask the veterinary team what to do.
What to do after the foster placement
Before the cat leaves, ask the rescue when the room and supplies can return to ordinary use and what cleaning or laundry steps remain for this disease. Follow the veterinarian’s instructions for the specific case, including how to handle dedicated items. Do not assume that a room is ready for another animal simply because it looks clean or because a general cleaning routine is complete.
