Guinea pigs can have small amounts of some fruits, but fruit should be an occasional treat—not part of the daily diet foundation. Apple, pear, and kiwi are among the fruits VCA lists as occasional choices. Guidance on citrus conflicts, so the cautious choice is to skip oranges and other citrus unless your veterinarian advises otherwise.

Can guinea pigs eat fruit?

Yes, in small amounts and only occasionally. VCA Animal Hospitals cautions that fruit is high in sugar; too much can disrupt intestinal bacteria and cause serious diarrhea. Fruit is a treat, not a necessary food or a substitute for hay, pellets, or vegetables.

What fruit is safe for guinea pigs?

VCA names apple, pear, kiwi, and orange as occasional fruit choices. These examples are not a complete list, and a listed fruit is not guaranteed to suit every guinea pig. Introduce any new food gradually and watch for changes in appetite, drinking, or droppings.

Apple and pear

VCA lists both as occasional options. The RSPCA gives a quarter of an apple as an example of a small fruit treat; that example is not an individualized serving prescription.

Kiwi

VCA lists kiwi as an occasional option but does not specify a portion. Keep it to a small treat rather than making it a routine food.

Orange and other citrus

Advice differs: VCA includes orange among occasional choices, while the RSPCA says citrus fruits should not be fed and warns that citrus can cause sores on guinea pigs’ lips. Because the guidance conflicts, avoid citrus unless your veterinarian recommends it.

How much fruit can I give my guinea pig?

There is no individualized serving size established by the cited guidance. VCA’s advice is qualitative—fruit only occasionally and in small amounts. The RSPCA’s quarter-apple example offers a sense of a small treat, not a daily schedule or a rule for every guinea pig. Follow your veterinarian’s advice if your pet has a health condition or needs a tailored diet.

How to prepare fruit and introduce it

  • Wash fresh produce before offering it.
  • Start with a small amount of a new food and introduce it gradually; sudden diet changes can lead to food refusal.
  • Contact a veterinarian if your guinea pig’s appetite, drinking, or droppings change.

What should a guinea pig eat instead of fruit?

The diet’s foundation should be unlimited grass hay, suitable guinea pig pellets, and varied fresh leafy greens and vegetables. VCA recommends timothy or other low-calcium hay, plus a smaller amount of commercial high-fiber, timothy-based guinea pig pellets and varied fresh greens and vegetables.

Guinea pigs cannot make vitamin C themselves. Pellets and vegetables can provide it; fruit should not be relied on as the vitamin C source. VCA gives a daily vitamin C range of 10–50 mg depending on factors such as age, health, stress, and pregnancy. This is general guidance, not a personal prescription—ask a veterinarian about your guinea pig’s needs. The RSPCA also notes that vitamin C in pellets declines with time and exposure to air.
