Helping an Older Dog Find a New Home: A Practical Guide

A practical guide for families placing an older dog and adopters considering one: start with the dog’s needs, ask local organizations about options, and make an informed match.

Start by asking why the dog needs to move. If a solvable housing, veterinary-care, or support problem is driving the decision, a local humane organization may know of help that could keep the dog safely with its family. If rehoming is necessary, contact a shelter or rescue and share the dog’s needs and history openly so the next placement can be an informed match.

How do I find a home for my older dog?

First, separate the reason for rehoming from the question of where the dog should go. Some families face a barrier that may be addressed with practical support; others cannot safely or realistically keep the dog. There is no one route that fits every situation.

Ask whether support could make staying possible

Contact a local shelter, humane society, or rescue and explain the specific difficulty—such as housing, access to veterinary care, or another family circumstance. Ask whether it offers safety-net services or can refer you to an organization that does. These services are not available everywhere, and keeping the dog at home is not appropriate if the dog’s safety or welfare cannot be maintained.

The reasons people report for rehoming are varied. In an ASPCA study release about respondents who had rehomed a pet in the prior five years, the primary reasons reported were pet-related issues (46%), family situations (27%), and housing issues (18%). Those figures describe that study’s respondents, not current annual rates or older dogs specifically. In the same study context, 37% said they placed the pet with a friend or family member and 36% said they took the pet to a shelter. Read the ASPCA’s account of the study.

Contact local shelters and rescues if a move is needed

A municipal shelter, nonprofit shelter, or rescue is a practical place to ask about intake, owner-support options, foster placement, and referrals. In the U.S., the ASPCA’s Find a Shelter page can help locate nearby organizations. Intake rules, space, and services vary by organization, so contact them before traveling or making plans.

Ask the organization what route seems suitable for this dog: support that allows the dog to remain with the family, shelter placement, rescue or foster placement, or—where appropriate—responsible relocation to an organization with relevant resources or adopter demand. The right option depends on local availability and the dog’s welfare needs. The ASPCA recognizes relocation for adoption as one tool alongside efforts to keep pets in homes and avoid unnecessary shelter intake; it is not a guarantee that another organization can accept a particular dog. See the ASPCA’s animal-relocation position.

Give the next caregiver a useful handover

When speaking with a shelter or rescue, describe the dog as an individual rather than relying on age alone. Share what you know about:

Bring available records and medication information when the organization advises you to do so. There is no single handover checklist used by every shelter or rescue; ask what information and paperwork the local organization needs. Be candid about challenges as well as strengths: accurate information helps staff assess what support or placement may fit.

Where can I rehome a senior dog?

For U.S. readers, start with organizations serving the area where the dog lives: a municipal shelter, local nonprofit shelter, humane society, or rescue. The ASPCA locator is one way to find organizations, but it does not establish that any particular group has space or accepts owner surrenders. Call or email to ask about its current process and alternatives.

If the first organization cannot help, ask whether it can suggest another local resource or explain how to pursue a responsible placement. Some organizations may have foster networks or experience with particular medical or behavioral needs; availability is local and case-specific. The ASPCA president and CEO Matt Bershadker has described the broader goal this way: “Keeping pets in loving homes, removing barriers to adoption and helping lost pets return to their families are some of the most effective ways to support animals and reduce pressure on shelters that are already operating at or beyond capacity,” according to the ASPCA’s U.S. animal shelter statistics page.

Should I adopt an older dog?

Age by itself cannot tell you whether a dog will suit your household. Older dogs may have more established personalities, and their prior household experience may be known. That can help you ask more specific matching questions, but it does not guarantee health, behavior, training, or compatibility. Discuss the individual dog with shelter or rescue staff, and ask what is known versus unknown. The ASPCA has described potential advantages of older-pet adoption, including the possibility of a clearer sense of a pet’s personality; those observations are not promises about every dog. See the ASPCA’s older-pet discussion and its 2020 article on senior pets.

Match the dog to your real household

Before deciding, discuss the areas that will shape everyday care. The goal is not to find a dog with a perfect record; it is to understand what the dog needs and whether your household can meet those needs.

  • Energy and mobility: Ask what activity the dog enjoys and whether stairs, slippery floors, or longer walks appear difficult.
  • Health and medication: Review known diagnoses, medications, and records with the organization; ask a veterinarian about the individual dog’s condition and care needs.
  • Temperament and routine: Ask how the dog behaves in familiar situations, handles visitors or being alone, and responds to daily routines.
  • Household fit: Discuss known experience with children and other animals, along with your own schedule, space, and capacity for care.

If a detail is unknown, treat it as unknown rather than assuming the dog will or will not cope. Ask the organization how it evaluates that uncertainty and what further conversation or support may be possible.

What should I know before bringing an older dog home?

Plan for the needs of the specific dog rather than assuming every older dog needs the same equipment or transition. Before pickup, ask the shelter or rescue what the dog is used to, what handling guidance matters, and what medical or routine information will travel with the dog. Arrange veterinary advice around that individual history rather than relying on a universal exam schedule or budget.

Prepare a calm arrival space and familiar basics where possible. A leash belongs on a practical arrival checklist, but it should be correctly fitted and appropriate to the dog’s size, mobility, and handling needs. The ASPCA mentioned a leash among supplies at a particular senior-pet adoption event in November 2025; that is an example, not a one-size-fits-all senior-dog prescription. Read about that event.

Give the dog time to show you its ordinary habits, and use the shelter’s or rescue’s guidance if questions arise. A move can reveal needs that were not apparent in another setting, so keep communication open with the organization and consult a veterinarian about health concerns.

What do U.S. shelter numbers say about older-dog adoption?

National shelter totals provide context, but they do not show the outcome for senior dogs separately. ASPCA and Shelter Animals Count reported that 5.8 million dogs and cats entered U.S. shelters and rescues in 2025, and 4.2 million shelter animals were adopted. Approximately 597,000 shelter animals were euthanized that year. These are all-age, national figures—not senior-dog adoption or outcome rates—and local conditions vary. The 2025 annual report release also described dog-and-cat community intakes as down 2% from 2024 and adoptions as up 0.7% from 2024. See the February 4, 2026 report release and the ASPCA’s shelter statistics page.

The sources cited here do not establish a current comparable national adoption rate specifically for senior dogs. All-age totals should not be used to infer how likely an individual older dog is to be adopted.
