Dog Training Tips: How to “Proof” Behaviors

Proofing helps a dog use a learned cue in new places and situations. Start with a fluent behavior, change one challenge at a time, and reward success.

Proofing a behavior means practicing it in different places and situations so your dog can respond to the same cue beyond the setting where they first learned it. A dog who sits in the kitchen may not yet understand that “sit” applies in the yard or on a busy sidewalk. Dogs learn within context, and new sights, sounds, people, handler positions, or competing activity can make a familiar cue harder. Best Friends Animal Society explains why a behavior that works at home may not work in public.

Before proofing, make sure your dog knows the behavior

Proofing comes after teaching. Start with a behavior your dog performs readily in a familiar, quiet place. In Best Friends Animal Society’s description, fluency means responding promptly to the cue—not offering the behavior without a cue, in response to a different cue, or substituting another behavior. If your dog is still learning what the cue means, keep teaching it before adding difficulty.

For example, if you are proofing “stay,” your dog should already understand the cue and be able to remain in position briefly in an easy setting.

Use the three Ds to choose what to practice

Think of proofing as adjusting three dimensions. Change one at a time at first so you can tell what your dog can handle.

  • Duration: How long your dog maintains the behavior.
  • Distance: How far you move away from your dog.
  • Distraction: What competing sights, sounds, people, animals, or activity are present.

Context matters, too. A new room, outdoor space, handler, or handler position can make a familiar cue feel different to a dog. Best Friends Animal Society and the American Kennel Club’s guide to the three Ds describe how these factors affect practice.

How to proof a behavior step by step

  1. Choose one familiar behavior and an easy starting place. Use a quiet setting where your dog already responds reliably to the cue.
  2. Pick one dimension to change. For a stay, you might begin with duration, keeping your position close and distractions low.
  3. Make a small adjustment. Ask for a slightly longer stay, take one small step away, or introduce a mild distraction at a manageable distance—not all three at once.
  4. Reward while the behavior is happening. For a stay, deliver the reward while your dog is still in position, then release them. Reward timing helps make clear which behavior earned the reward.
  5. Repeat at that level until it is dependable. Best Friends suggests increasing difficulty when the dog succeeds about 80% of the time in that specific scenario. This is the organization’s practical rule of thumb, not a universally validated scientific threshold.
  6. Raise difficulty gradually, then combine dimensions. Once duration, distance, and distraction are each more reliable on their own, combine them in small steps—for example, a short stay while a person passes at a manageable distance.

The International Working Dog Association’s guidance likewise recommends adjusting other variables as one becomes more challenging and grading distractions to the individual dog.

What to do when your dog struggles

A broken stay or a missed cue is useful feedback: the setup may be too difficult right now. Make the next repetition easier instead of repeating the cue while your dog is unable to respond.

  • If duration is too hard, shorten the hold.
  • If distance is too hard, move closer or take a smaller step away.
  • If distraction is too hard, increase the distance from it, choose a milder distraction, or return to a quieter location.
  • If the behavior falls apart in a new context, practice again in an easier place before trying that context at a lower level of difficulty.

Keep the other dimensions easy while you adjust the one that caused difficulty. As distractions increase, a more valuable reward may help maintain your dog’s interest; no particular treat brand or equipment is required.

Practice with reward-based methods

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior states: “Based on current scientific evidence, AVSAB recommends that only reward-based training methods are used for all dog training, including the treatment of behavior problems.” AVSAB’s position-statements page says the organization stands behind its 2021 humane dog-training position.

If your dog’s responses remain difficult around distractions, consider help from a credentialed reward-based trainer or behavior consultant. AVSAB recommends working with credentialed professionals who use humane, evidence-based practices.
