Choose one primary goal—such as filling a shelter-approved supply list—and one or two supporting goals. A clear purpose helps guests understand what to do, whether that means ordering an item, donating money, joining a craft demonstration, or asking about fostering.
What to put on a kitten shower wish list
Ask the shelter or rescue for its current wish list and any product specifications before sharing a registry. Best Friends names kitten milk replacer (KMR) as a possible donation; Friends of Oakland Animal Services lists formula, bottles, blankets, toys, wet food, and litter. These are examples, not a universal shopping list. Formula requirements and accepted brands can vary, so use the host’s exact directions rather than assuming a particular product is suitable.

- Include only requested items. Confirm formula type, brand, size, and other specifications with the host.
- If guests can give money instead, ask the host to explain what requested amounts support using its own current costs and needs.
- For a craft activity, confirm which materials the shelter can use before asking guests to make toys or blankets.
Friends of Oakland Animal Services reported using 420 packs of wet food and 175 bags of litter during the peak of “last year’s kitten season”; the page result does not state the calendar year. Those figures illustrate the scale of one organization’s needs, not a forecast for another shelter.
Choose an online format and plan the event
Best Friends names Facebook Live, Instagram Live, and Zoom as possible formats. Its guide does not compare their current features, so choose the option the host can operate and intended guests can access. Before deciding, check that the wish-list or donation route can be shown clearly and that the format can handle demonstrations and audience questions.

Best Friends recommends assigning roles, preparing a schedule, and testing the selected platform before going live. Its sample agenda is 60 minutes, but that is an adaptable example—not a required length.

Prepare the people and the room
- Assign a host, a person to monitor questions and comments, and presenters for demonstrations or foster information.
- Confirm each participant’s role and expectations in advance. If kittens will appear on camera, coordinate with their caregiver and keep their comfort and care first.
- Rehearse platform controls, including how to admit or mute participants if relevant, display the wish list, and recover if a presenter loses connection.
- Check the camera, sound, lighting, and demonstration materials before the event. Keep the donation link ready to paste into the chat or display on screen.
Make donations easy to find and understand
Put the approved wish list wherever people encounter the event: event posts, email, the host’s landing page, and any publicity. For money donations, ask the organization to supply current, accurate examples of what contributions help cover. Explain only what the host has confirmed, and make clear whether a donation is monetary or an item purchase through the approved registry.

Promote through the host’s community
- Prepare graphics and social posts that state the event’s purpose, date, time, and direct donation route.
- Ask volunteers to share the event and, where appropriate, help organize donation drives at places that carry requested supplies, such as pet-supply stores or veterinary clinics.
- Consider a landing page, email announcement, or press release if the host has those channels.
- Include the wish-list link in each promotional channel, not only in the livestream description.

A shower can also answer questions about orphaned kitten care, feeding and weaning, what to do when kittens are found, and how fostering works. Best Friends suggests inviting volunteers with kitten-care experience to answer questions. Have the host review care information and decide who is qualified to answer detailed questions; direct individual medical concerns to an appropriate veterinary professional.

Explain foster needs as local and specific. Best Friends gives examples of six to eight weeks for bottle babies and two to three weeks for unweaned kittens, but these are guide-specific estimates, not a universal commitment. Ask the hosting organization to state its current expectations, training, support, and application process. Do not promise a particular duration or placement on the organization’s behalf.
