Canine Care and Enrichment: A Practical Guide to Keeping Dogs Healthy and Engaged

Build a dog’s routine around preventive care, suitable food, safe activity, and enrichment tailored to the individual—not a one-size-fits-all plan.

Good canine care brings preventive veterinary visits, appropriate food, activity, safety, and mental enrichment into one routine. There is no universal plan: a dog’s age, health, temperament, activity level, and environment all matter. Work with your veterinarian on medical care, diet, weight, and exercise decisions.

What belongs in a dog’s care routine?

Care is more than responding when a dog seems sick or adding more exercise. It means checking in on health and behavior, feeding an appropriate amount, offering safe opportunities to move and explore, and adapting the routine as the dog’s needs change. The AVMA describes regular preventive care as important to pets’ health and quality of life (AVMA National Pet Week).

Use routine veterinary visits to raise questions about weight, nutrition, behavior, exercise, and parasite protection. The AVMA’s preventive-care resource suggests owners ask questions such as “How is my pet’s weight?” and “What should my pet’s ideal weight be?” (AVMA preventive-care resource).

How should you choose food and manage weight?

Feeding needs depend on the individual dog, so a veterinarian can help assess the dog, its diet, and how food is provided at home. The FDA’s summary of AAHA guidance recommends nutritional assessment at routine physical examinations throughout a pet’s life (FDA summary of AAHA nutritional guidance).

Barkwhiz Dog Puzzle Toy 3 Levels, Mental stimulating for Boredom and smart Dogs, Treat Puzzle for All Breeds Dog
  • Four Challenges & Levels 1-3: Multiple games with a flip game and a linear track sliding game, all requiring dogs to learn steps and find treats. This puzzle is designed to be more fun and difficult, with more unique ways to play. It can enhance your dog's IQ and train their sense of smell
  • Prolong the Feeding Time: The 14-hole food storage slow feeder has four ways to play, which is effective in slowing down the dog's eating speed. It is also beneficial to the dog's physical and mental health by increasing the time and difficulty of acquiring food, thus avoiding gastrointestinal issues caused by indigestion
  • Safe Materials & Cleanable: Furry friends can safely play with this toy, which is made of food-safe and long-lasting materials. Additionally, it is easy to clean with warm water and soap after use
  • Six Silicone Anti-Slip Pads: Six silicone anti-slip pads with high resistance ensure a firm grip and prevent the item from sliding to one side during feeding
  • Warm Tips: When playing with the puzzle, please keep your dog with you to prevent any possible destruction of the toy. The toy has a tight design of built-in game components, so you don't need to worry about them being easily dislodged and swallowed by your dog

Measure the dog’s daily food rather than relying on treats or food toys to fill an untracked extra allowance. The AVMA’s 2023 healthy-weight brochure says treats should generally make up less than 10% of daily calorie needs; this is a general practice, not a personalized prescription. Food placed in a puzzle or dispensing toy counts toward the same daily amount (AVMA healthy-weight brochure).

AVMA estimates that 52.7% of dogs in the United States are overweight or obese; that figure is an estimate stated on its 2026 National Pet Week page, not a diagnosis of any individual dog (AVMA National Pet Week). If you are concerned about your dog’s body condition or feeding amount, ask the veterinary team to assess it rather than making a drastic change on your own.

How can enrichment support a dog’s everyday needs?

Enrichment gives a dog appropriate ways to use natural behaviors such as sniffing, searching, eating, moving, and learning. AAHA groups enrichment examples into cognitive, food, sensory, and physical activities (AAHA indoor enrichment guide). Rotate ideas and pay attention to what your dog enjoys and can do safely; one toy or activity will not suit every dog.

Thinking and learning Short, positive training sessions or learning a new skill Engagement through interaction and problem-solving.
Play and movement Interactive toys and varied play suited to the dog Physical engagement alongside other forms of enrichment.

A dog food puzzle toy can be one useful option for feeding enrichment or slowing eating, but it is not essential equipment and does not replace walks, play, training, or veterinary care. Choose a puzzle the dog can use without frustration or unsafe chewing, and supervise when appropriate. AVMA also recommends puzzles, games, interactive toys, and learning new skills as ways to support natural behavior (AVMA preventive-care resource).

How much activity does a dog need?

There is no universal exercise-minute target that fits every dog. Activity choices should take account of age, health, fitness, temperament, surroundings, and weather. Consult a veterinarian before starting an exercise program, particularly if your dog has a health concern or has not been active regularly (AVMA dog behavior, training, and exercise guidance).

How can you support safe behavior and social experiences?

Introduce dogs gradually to new people, animals, and environments, keeping exposure controlled and positive rather than forcing interaction. Supervise young children around dogs. If fear or aggression seems excessive or unprovoked, consult a veterinarian for assessment instead of assuming the cause or relying on breed stereotypes (AVMA dog-bite prevention guidance).
