To photograph a dark-coated pet clearly, use soft light, make the eyes visible, and place the animal against a background that contrasts with its coat. Check focus and exposure in a test frame rather than relying on one setting: the right choices depend on the light, the background, and whether the animal is still or moving.
Start with soft light
Indoors, try a bright spot near a window that is out of direct sun. Outdoors, use open shade or a cloudy day. Harsh sunlight can make dark fur difficult to photograph, while soft light helps reveal its shape and texture. Best Friends Animal Society recommends avoiding direct sun where possible; if you cannot, try early morning or just before sunset. Best Friends’ dark-animal photography handout offers this advice for photographing dark-colored animals.
Look for light that reaches the face and eyes. A small reflection in the eye—a catchlight—makes the gaze easier to see and can help the face stand out from the coat. Nikon notes that a black-coated pet’s eyes can be hard for animal-detection autofocus to distinguish from its fur, so useful light on the eyes matters for both the photograph and autofocus. Choose a background that separates from the coat
A dark pet against a dark, busy background can lose its outline. Try a colorful bed or blanket, or move to a spot with a simpler backdrop. Leave some distance between the animal and the background when possible; a wide aperture can soften distracting details behind the subject. Best Friends suggests using a colorful bed or blanket, while Sony’s guidance on animal-eye focusing also notes that camera detection can be difficult in dark locations.

A wide aperture can also help in dim light by allowing a faster shutter speed, but it reduces depth of field. That means the eye must be sharply focused and parts of the face may fall out of focus, especially if the animal is turned at an angle. Use a narrower aperture if you need more of the face in focus and there is enough light to support it. Best Friends’ handout discusses aperture and background separation in its dark-animal tips.
Get to eye level and keep the gaze natural
When practical, photograph from near the animal’s eye level. This gives a clearer view of the face than a steep angle from above and makes the eyes easier to see. You can gently attract attention with a squeak or a toy held just above the camera, as Best Friends suggests. Keep the session comfortable and brief: stop if the animal seems uneasy, and do not use a sound or toy that frightens or frustrates it.

Wait for a visible eye or catchlight before taking the frame. Eye contact can help a portrait feel engaging, but it is not essential in every photograph; a relaxed side glance or candid moment can work just as well.
Make autofocus work for the eyes
If your camera offers animal eye detection, enable it and check that its focus indicator is actually on an eye. The feature is helpful, not infallible. Sony’s guide for the DSC-RX10M4 identifies dark hair and dark locations as difficult conditions for eye detection; Nikon likewise notes that black-coated pets’ eyes can blend into their fur. Menu names and behavior vary by camera model.

If the camera does not find the eye, try these steps:
- Move or turn the animal toward better light so the eye is easier to distinguish.
- Check whether the focus indicator is on the eye, not the nose or background.
- If eye detection misses, focus on the face or select a focus area yourself.
- Take another frame and check sharpness before continuing.
Sony’s model-specific DSC-RX10M4 eye-focus guide advises focusing on the face once when it is out of focus, then letting eye detection try again. The exact controls differ on other cameras, so consult the instructions for your model.

Set exposure for the actual scene
There is no single exposure-compensation number that works for every dark animal. A dark coat against a bright background presents a different metering challenge from a dark coat in a dim room. Take a test shot, inspect the fur and the histogram, and adjust exposure compensation until the coat looks natural and its texture remains visible. Nikon School UK recommends experimenting with compensation and checking the histogram in its pet-photography guidance.
Do not assume that a compensation setting recommended for a white animal applies to black fur. Keep an eye on both the darkest areas and any highlights on the coat; aim to show useful detail without making the fur look unnaturally bright or losing its texture. Capturing RAW (called NEF on Nikon cameras) gives you more room to adjust exposure later, but it cannot restore detail that was never captured.

For active pets, prioritize shutter speed
Movement can blur a sharp-looking portrait even when focus is on the eye. For a running or playing pet, use continuous autofocus and raise the shutter speed until the animal’s movement is acceptably frozen. Nikon School UK gives around 1/500 second or faster as a starting guideline for freezing a pet in action, not a guarantee: the speed needed depends on how quickly the animal moves, the light available, and your camera.
If the shutter speed is too slow, add light, open the aperture if the depth of field allows, or raise ISO. A fast prime lens can help in a dim room, though its shallow depth of field makes accurate eye focus more important. For a calm animal, you can usually use a slower shutter speed than for one running or jumping.
Use bounce flash only when the room allows it
In a dim indoor room, a compatible shoe-mounted or off-camera Speedlight can help capture a fleeting expression. Nikon recommends bouncing flash from a white or light-colored ceiling to soften the light and add a catchlight; Nikon School also describes bouncing from a wall or ceiling. A dark or strongly colored surface may not reflect enough light or may cast an unwanted color onto the coat. Avoid pointing flash directly into the animal’s eyes, and check whether flash is permitted where you are photographing.
Flash is optional, not a prerequisite. If the pet is uncomfortable with it, turn it off and move to a brighter window-side spot or wait for better natural light.
