Yes—guinea pigs can eat romaine, green leaf, red leaf, bib, and gem lettuce. Avoid iceberg lettuce, and offer any suitable lettuce as one part of a varied diet—not instead of hay or guinea pig pellets.
Which types of lettuce can guinea pigs eat?

The guidance identifies specific suitable varieties and advises against iceberg; it does not establish that every unlisted lettuce variety is harmful.
How lettuce fits into a guinea pig’s diet
Lettuce is a fresh green, not a dietary foundation. Good-quality hay should make up most of the diet, with unlimited low-calcium hay recommended by VCA. How to offer lettuce safely
- Choose a suitable variety. Offer romaine, leaf, bib, or gem lettuce rather than iceberg.
- Wash the greens well before offering them.
- Introduce it gradually. Sudden diet changes may cause a guinea pig to refuse food, according to VCA. When adding lettuce or another new food, watch whether your pet continues eating and drinking normally and check its droppings.
The cited guidance does not establish a lettuce-specific serving size or frequency, so do not treat a particular amount as a universal recommendation.

Does lettuce provide enough vitamin C?
No single lettuce choice should be treated as a complete vitamin C plan. Guinea pigs need vitamin C in their diet. VCA says guinea pigs need 10–50 mg per day, with needs varying by factors such as age, health, stress, and pregnancy; this is a vitamin C requirement, not a lettuce serving recommendation. VCA also notes that an appropriate diet of pellets, hay, and greens may provide enough without an extra supplement, and advises discussing an individual guinea pig’s needs with a veterinarian.
VCA cautions that vitamin C in pellets may no longer be adequate 90 days after manufacture. Check pellet freshness and consult a veterinarian about your pet’s diet rather than relying on lettuce or adding a supplement without advice.
