Call the emergency veterinary hospital as you prepare to leave, follow its instructions, and get your pet there promptly. Keep your pet as still and contained as you safely can, protect yourself from bites or scratches, and bring relevant medical or poisoning information. First aid during transport is not a substitute for veterinary care.
What to do before you leave
- Call the emergency hospital. Describe what happened and your pet’s current signs, ask where to go, and give an estimated arrival time if you can. Follow the clinician’s advice about handling and transport. Call directly to confirm the clinic is open and can receive your pet; do not assume availability based on its usual hours. The AVMA’s 2025 pet first-aid guidance and VCA’s emergency clinic guidance recommend contacting the hospital and sharing useful details.
- Arrange a safe trip. Plan the route if possible. Keep the pet contained rather than loose in the vehicle. If another person is available, ask them to drive or help so you can focus on the animal, provided doing so does not delay urgent care.
- Gather useful information without delaying departure. Take medications and available medical records. Be ready to tell the clinic when the problem began, what happened, what remedies or treatments you tried, and whether you suspect a toxin. If poisoning may be involved, bring the product packaging or container.
How to move and contain your pet
Keep your pet quiet and minimize movement as much as practical. Pain and fear can cause even a normally gentle animal to react defensively, so approach cautiously, avoid hugging an injured pet, and keep your face away from its mouth. Get help from another person if available, but do not let restraint interfere with breathing.
Small dogs and cats
Use a carrier or sturdy, ventilated box. If the carrier has a removable top, take it off and lower your pet inside rather than forcing the animal through a narrow door. A frightened cat may be wrapped carefully in a towel if needed, with its airway left clear. Keep the cat in the carrier when you arrive until clinic staff can help, when that is appropriate for the situation.
Large dogs
A blanket, board, or sled can serve as a makeshift stretcher. Coordinate with another person if possible and lift carefully, keeping the dog supported. If you suspect a spinal injury, broken bones, or major trauma, avoid unnecessary movement and ask the emergency hospital for case-specific handling advice.
