Choose an emergency veterinarian for severe, sudden, or potentially life-threatening symptoms; contact your regular veterinarian for routine care and stable, non-urgent problems. If you are unsure whether your pet is stable, call a veterinary professional or emergency facility promptly rather than waiting for symptoms to worsen or relying on online advice.
When does a pet need emergency veterinary care?
Go to an emergency facility now for signs such as difficulty breathing, collapse or loss of consciousness, seizures, major bleeding, severe trauma, suspected poisoning or dangerous-object ingestion, heatstroke, a painful swollen abdomen, or inability to urinate. These examples come from veterinary hospital and professional association guidance; they are not a complete diagnostic checklist. A pet’s species, medical history, and the details of the symptoms matter.
Other emergency concerns identified by VCA include eye injury, sudden weakness, extreme pain, unusual behavior, and labor that does not progress. Repeated retching with abdominal swelling is also a reason to seek emergency assessment. If a symptom is severe, rapidly worsening, or makes you think your pet may be critically ill, contact a veterinarian or emergency facility immediately.
VCA advises pet owners to call a veterinarian rather than seek emergency advice online. Call the emergency clinic before you leave when feasible; advance notice can help the team prepare for your pet’s arrival. VCA: Emergency Veterinary Care

When is the regular veterinarian the right choice?
Your regular veterinary practice is usually the first contact for routine care and problems that are stable and not urgent, especially during normal business hours. It can assess whether the pet can be seen there, advise whether an emergency referral is needed, and arrange follow-up care.
Stable chronic conditions and comparatively mild complaints may be handled by a regular practice or, where available, an urgent-care service. The right setting depends on how the pet is acting, whether symptoms are changing, and whether the clinic can see the pet. Conditions that seem minor can become urgent if their severity changes; call the clinic for guidance rather than assuming that a familiar problem can wait. VCA: Levels of Veterinary Care

Could urgent care be an intermediate option?
Some communities have veterinary urgent-care services for problems that need timely evaluation but are not emergencies. VCA lists repeated vomiting or diarrhea and lethargy among reasons to seek urgent evaluation. Severe illness, or being unable to stand or walk, calls for emergency care instead. Availability and triage recommendations differ among facilities, so call and describe the symptoms before choosing a destination. VCA: Urgent Care for Pets
How do emergency and regular veterinary care work together?
An emergency team can treat a crisis or an after-hours episode; once the pet is stabilized, the regular veterinarian may take over ongoing or routine care. Ask the emergency doctor to share the diagnosis, treatment, medication instructions, and follow-up plan with your regular clinic. VCA recommends that emergency clinicians communicate with the pet’s veterinarian and return the pet to the regular clinic for needed follow-up. VCA: Emergency Veterinary Clinics

What should you check when choosing a facility?
In an urgent situation, prioritize the pet’s condition and the facility’s ability to provide the needed care. If the regular clinic is open, call to ask whether it can see the pet promptly or advises going directly to an emergency hospital. For severe signs, do not delay emergency care while comparing options.
When planning ahead or deciding between appropriate non-emergency options, confirm details directly with nearby clinics:

- Ask your regular clinic what to do after hours, which emergency facility it recommends, and whether that facility is staffed overnight.
- Save the emergency facility’s phone number and address where you can find them quickly.
- Keep relevant medical records accessible, particularly if your pet has a chronic condition that could worsen suddenly.
- When you need emergency care, call the facility before arrival if feasible and ask how to proceed.
First aid may help while arranging care or traveling, but it does not replace veterinary treatment. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s 2023 Pet First Aid brochure says, “First aid care is not a substitute for veterinary care, but it may save your pet’s life until you can get them veterinary care.”
