To keep a pet snake contained, use a sturdy enclosure with a lid or door that latches securely, intact ventilation openings the snake cannot fit through, and no gaps around the edges or seams. To reduce accidental substrate swallowing, choose bedding suited to the species and avoid loose material the snake can readily take into its mouth when striking at food. Feeding outside the enclosure is an option, not a rule: moving a snake can cause stress and may increase regurgitation risk.
Secure the enclosure without blocking ventilation
UC Davis California Veterinary Emergency Team guidance calls for solid sides and bottom and a very secure top. Screen or mesh ventilation and ventilation holes are acceptable when the openings are small enough to prevent escape and injury. Do not cover vents as a shortcut; use an enclosure designed to provide both airflow and containment. UC Davis veterinary guidance
Check the closure after routine access, since a lid or door that is secure when first set up can be left unlatched after feeding or cleaning. Inspect edges, seams, vents, and screens for gaps, damage, or openings large enough for the snake to pass through. Match the enclosure’s design and dimensions to the species and the individual animal.
Closure approaches to assess
The Florida Museum describes secure snap-in screen tops, sliding glass doors secured with a pin or jeweler’s lock, and hinged doors held by clasps or other mechanisms. These are examples of closure approaches, not endorsements of particular products. Assess whether the closure stays engaged after ordinary access. Florida Museum guidance

Reduce the chance of swallowing substrate
Snakes can take substrate into their mouths while striking at prey. The University of Minnesota’s veterinary teaching resource advises keeping reptiles on substrate they cannot ingest. Choose material with the species’ humidity, natural behavior, and health needs in mind, and avoid loose pieces the snake can readily swallow. University of Minnesota snake-care guidance

UC Davis lists paper towels or newspaper as bedding options that are easy to clean or change. Texas A&M’s Sharman Hoppes cautions that some reptiles may ingest sand and that pine or cedar oils can irritate snakes. These are sourced examples and cautions, not a universal prescription for every species. Consult a reptile-experienced veterinarian if ingestion is persistent or you are uncertain what substrate suits your snake.
Should you take a snake out of its enclosure to feed it?
There is no universal rule in these veterinary teaching sources that snakes must always be fed elsewhere. Feeding in a separate container can prevent contact with enclosure substrate during a strike, but moving the animal may cause stress or make regurgitation more likely; feeding location can also affect behavior. Weigh the substrate risk against those potential drawbacks for your particular snake. University of Minnesota snake-care guidance

A dish or other flat surface may help keep prey off loose substrate, but the cited guidance does not validate a specific product or establish that this method works for every animal. If you change feeding location or method, consider your snake’s response and seek veterinary advice about recurring substrate ingestion.

Mesh ventilation designed for a captive enclosure can be appropriate when its openings are small enough to prevent escape or injury. Loose landscape mesh and erosion-control blankets are a different application and can entangle wildlife. Illinois Extension reported that 22 foxsnakes became entangled in erosion-control blankets in one day and six died before they could be released. That 2021 report concerns wildlife caught in landscape materials; it is not evidence about captive enclosure lids. Illinois Extension, 2021
