For a dog-friendly birthday cake, the American Kennel Club (AKC) offers a simple peanut-butter cake made with flour, baking powder and milk. Use peanut butter only after checking the label for xylitol, let the cake cool completely before decorating, and serve it as an occasional treat—not a meal. The recipe is a starting point, not a guarantee that every ingredient suits every dog.

AKC dog birthday cake recipe

The quantities and baking directions below are from the AKC dog birthday cake recipe; they have not been independently tested here.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted natural peanut butter, confirmed xylitol-free
  • 2 cups whole-wheat flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 cup skim milk

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a cake pan or baking sheet.
  2. Mix the flour and baking powder in one bowl. In another, combine the peanut butter and milk.
  3. Mix the wet and dry ingredients together.
  4. Bake for 20 minutes, or until lightly brown.
  5. Cool the cake completely before adding any icing or frosting.

AKC also describes a cookie variation: roll the dough to 1/4-inch thickness and cut shapes with cookie cutters.

Check the peanut butter label for xylitol

Read the ingredient label every time, even if you have bought the same product before. AKC says peanut butter for dogs should not contain xylitol; formulations can change. The ASPCA Poison Control food-hazard guidance warns that xylitol can cause hypoglycemia and potentially liver damage in dogs. If your dog may have eaten xylitol, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly.

What can you use for dog cake frosting?

Frosting is optional. AKC suggests yogurt icing or dog-safe frosting after the cake has cooled. Zoetis describes plain nonfat Greek yogurt mixed with natural peanut butter as one possible alternative, provided the peanut butter has no artificial sweeteners. Check every ingredient for your dog’s suitability, and ask your veterinarian before introducing unfamiliar foods. Avoid ordinary human frosting and decorations unless you have confirmed their ingredients are appropriate.

Serve it as a small, occasional treat

There is no universal slice size established for this cake. Keep portions modest: peanut butter is high in fat, and treats should be given sparingly rather than replacing a balanced diet. See AKC’s peanut butter guidance and the ASPCA’s treat guidance for more information.

A general recipe cannot account for a particular dog’s allergies, food intolerance, diabetes, pancreatitis risk or other medical conditions. If your dog has dietary restrictions or a health condition, ask your veterinarian before baking or serving the cake. Zoetis also recommends checking with a veterinarian before introducing new foods or ingredients.

Why a human bakery cake is not a shortcut

Do not assume a human bakery cake, cake mix or its frosting is suitable for a dog. Ingredients such as xylitol, chocolate, grapes and raisins, and excess salt are among the concerns listed by ASPCA Poison Control. For a celebration treat, use ingredients you have checked rather than relying on a cake’s appearance or name.
