Puppies develop in broad, overlapping stages—not on a single calendar. In their first weeks they depend on their mother, then rapidly gain sensory awareness and mobility. Early socialization, teething, adolescence, and adult maturity follow, but the timing varies with the individual dog, its breed, and its environment. Here’s what to expect from birth through age two, and how to support each stage.
How to read a puppy development timeline
Age ranges are useful guides, not deadlines. The American Kennel Club (AKC), VCA Animal Hospitals, and the MSD Veterinary Manual draw stage boundaries differently: some use broad owner-facing phases, while others distinguish early biological and social periods in more detail. MSD notes that developmental periods are influenced by genetic and environmental factors and “should therefore not be considered absolute.” MSD Veterinary Manual
The timeline below combines those approaches for practical use. A puppy may show signs associated with more than one stage at once, and maturity has several meanings: physical, sexual, emotional, and social development do not necessarily happen together.
Birth to about 2 weeks: Neonatal stage
Newborn puppies have closed eyes and ears, limited mobility, and rely on their mother for nursing, warmth, and help with elimination. They sleep much of the time. The AKC describes this as the neonatal period; the MSD Veterinary Manual places it from birth through about day 13. AKC puppy growth timeline MSD Veterinary Manual

- Used Book in Good Condition
At this age, maternal care is central. The MSD Veterinary Manual also identifies appropriate breeder handling and the puppy’s early environment as relevant to development. Newborns are not equipped to meet their needs independently; concerns about feeding, warmth, elimination, or health call for prompt veterinary guidance.
About 2 to 3 or 4 weeks: Transitional stage
Eyes and ears open and continue developing, movement improves, and puppies begin interacting more with their surroundings and littermates. They also start eliminating without the mother’s stimulation. These changes unfold over a short period: MSD describes a transitional stage from days 13–19, while the AKC’s broader overview places the changes across roughly two to four weeks. About 3 to 12–14 weeks: Socialization
Play, exploration, and social attachment increase. Puppies learn through experiences with their mother and littermates, and learning continues when they move into a home. VCA describes socialization as beginning around three weeks and extending to about 12–14 weeks; MSD uses a range beginning around day 19 and ending at 12 weeks. These are overlapping estimates, not a universal cutoff. VCA Animal Hospitals MSD Veterinary Manual
Make new experiences gradual and positive
Offer gentle, positive exposure to a variety of people, places, ordinary sounds, surfaces, and other animals. Keep introductions controlled and watch the puppy’s response. If it seems frightened or uncomfortable, give it space rather than pushing it to endure the encounter. The goal is safe, reassuring learning—not exposure at any cost. Continue after the puppy comes home
Socialization is not a one-time task, and missing the early sensitive period does not mean a dog can no longer learn. Continue positive introductions and basic training at home. Do not assume all exposure must wait until every vaccination is complete: MSD cautions that postponing exposure can miss early socialization. Ask your veterinarian how to balance safe experiences with your individual puppy’s vaccination status and local disease risks. MSD Veterinary Manual
Roughly 3 to 6 months: Juvenile development and teething
Curiosity and independence grow as puppies explore, play, and continue learning household routines and social skills. Sources use different labels for this period—including juvenile, testing, or ranking—and the boundaries are approximate. These terms should not be taken to mean that ordinary exploration is evidence of dominance or that every puppy will behave in a predictable sequence. VCA places its testing/ranking period at about 3–6 months; the AKC discusses development across a broader first-year timeline. VCA Animal Hospitals AKC puppy growth timeline
Expect more chewing as adult teeth emerge
As permanent teeth come in, chewing and mouthing can become more noticeable. Offer a safe, puppy-appropriate chew toy as an alternative to household objects, and supervise chewing. The AKC highlights chew toys in its discussion of puppies around 12–24 weeks old. AKC guidance on puppy teething and nipping
Keep building skills
Use play and consistent, positive training to reinforce routines and useful behaviors. Puppy classes can provide structured opportunities to learn and socialize; the AKC recommends classes as part of its owner-facing development guidance. Choose experiences that suit your puppy’s temperament, and adjust when it shows discomfort. AKC puppy growth timeline

About 6 to 18–24 months: Adolescence
Adolescence may bring more independence, exploration, and testing of familiar boundaries. A puppy that learned a behavior earlier may need continued practice as it matures. Maintain training, age-appropriate activity, and mental engagement rather than assuming early lessons will hold without reinforcement.
The labels and ages vary by source. VCA describes adolescence as roughly 6–18 months. The AKC’s general timeline gives a teenage period of about 6–12 months and says many dogs reach emotional maturity around 12–18 months; another AKC article describes adolescence beginning around eight months and sometimes continuing to two years. Sexual maturity may also begin during this broad period, but it is not the same as emotional or skeletal maturity. VCA Animal Hospitals AKC puppy growth timeline AKC on canine adolescence
Around 12 to 24 months and beyond: The adult transition
Many dogs become more settled as they approach adulthood, but there is no single birthday when puppyhood ends for every dog. Physical growth, sexual maturity, emotional maturity, and social maturity are separate milestones. Breed size and individual development affect timing; larger dogs often take longer to mature. The AKC says many dogs reach emotional maturity around 12–18 months, while MSD places social maturity at about 12–36 months. Some dogs therefore continue developing socially beyond the two-year scope of this timeline. AKC puppy growth timeline MSD Veterinary Manual
When to get individual help
Stage descriptions cannot determine whether a particular puppy’s development or behavior is healthy. Ask your veterinarian about individual concerns, especially when they involve health, vaccination risk, or exposure to other animals. For severe fearfulness or a behavior concern that is difficult to manage, seek help from your veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional. MSD Veterinary Manual
