Rabbits may show affection by grooming you, nudging for attention, or choosing to settle near you. Binkies and relaxed flops are signs of happiness and comfort, but they do not necessarily mean the rabbit is directing affection at you. Read each cue in context and alongside your rabbit’s usual behavior.

1. Licking or grooming you

When a rabbit licks you, it may be offering social grooming, much as rabbits groom one another. The RSPCA describes licking as a common sign of affection, while the PDSA explains that rabbits may groom people as they do their rabbit companions. It is a meaningful sign of social comfort, though it should not be treated as proof of a human-like emotion.

2. Nudging you gently

A soft nudge with the nose can be a request for attention, but it can also mean your rabbit wants you to stop touching them. PetMD notes both possibilities, and the City of Hayward’s rabbit behavior handout likewise advises interpreting nudges alongside the rabbit’s overall body language.

Pause when your rabbit nudges you. If they remain relaxed and seek contact again, they may want attention; if they move away or seem tense, give them space. Don’t assume every nudge is an invitation to pet.

3. Choosing to rest close to you

If your rabbit voluntarily settles beside you, that can be a cue that they feel comfortable and safe in your company. Resting near a companion is associated with close bonds, but individual rabbits vary in how much contact they seek. Let your rabbit choose the distance rather than placing them beside you or holding them there.

4. Binkying nearby

A binky is a joyful-looking leap and twist in the air. The RSPCA describes binkies as a sign that a rabbit is very happy, and PetMD includes them among happy body-language cues. A binky near you suggests positive energy; it does not necessarily mean the jump is meant for you.

5. Flopping or lounging in your presence

A rabbit may flop onto their side, rest in a loaf, or stretch out when relaxed. These postures suggest comfort in the surroundings. They are indirect affection cues: the rabbit may feel safe while you are nearby, but a relaxed posture alone does not show that they are seeking social contact.

How to tell comfort from a request for space

Rabbits communicate subtly, and a single gesture can have more than one meaning. As the RSPCA notes, behavior varies with age, personality, and past experience; learning what is normal for your rabbit makes changes easier to notice. Eloise Dicks, the RSPCA’s Scientific and Policy Officer, says: “Rabbits can be subtle communicators, and their behaviour can be easy to misread – or miss completely. Recognising and understanding what they’re telling us helps us give them the care and support they need.”

  • A nudge may ask for attention or signal that contact should stop; pause and watch what your rabbit does next.
  • A gentle nip may be grooming or attention-seeking, but it can also mean your rabbit wants space.
  • Loud tooth grinding, tense or fearful posture, reluctance to move, withdrawal, or an abrupt change in habits can signal distress, discomfort, or pain.
  • Never force an interaction or try to make a rabbit perform an affectionate behavior.

Contact a veterinarian if your rabbit has a sudden behavior change or shows signs of illness, pain, or fear. Rabbits may hide discomfort, so an unusual change is worth taking seriously.
