There is no single ideal meal schedule for every cat. Start with a nutritionally complete diet, measure the daily amount, and adapt the timing and setup to your cat’s age, health and comfort.
How often should you feed your cat?
Meal frequency depends on life stage, health and the routine your household can keep consistently. Cornell Feline Health Center’s general guidance is:

| Most adults | Once or twice a day |
| Senior cats | Usually continue the existing schedule unless a veterinarian advises a change |
These are broad guidelines, not a prescription. A kitten’s growth, an adult cat’s activity, medication or a health condition can change what is appropriate. Cornell notes that a kitten’s energy needs vary greatly with age: the 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines report 200 kcal/kg of body weight per day at 10 weeks and 80 kcal/kg per day at 10 months. Those guideline figures illustrate the change across kittenhood; they are not individual feeding amounts. Ask your veterinarian for a plan if your cat has a medical condition or you are unsure how much to feed.
Some cats do well with dry food available throughout the day, but free access can lead others to overeat and gain weight. It can also make it hard to know how much each cat is eating in a multi-cat home. Measured portions, separate feeding stations or scheduled meals make intake easier to monitor. An automatic feeder may help with timing, but it does not determine the right daily amount.

Why does your cat beg for food?
Food-seeking is not always proof that a cat needs a larger serving. Cats retain hunting and foraging behaviors, and food itself can provide stimulation. An AAFP feeding consensus statement describes feeding programs that can include frequent small meals, foraging and solitary feeding. Its chair, Tammy Sadek, DVM, DABVP (Feline), notes that “many indoor cats have little environmental stimulation, and eating can become an activity in and of itself.”
Instead of adding food whenever your cat asks, first check the measured daily ration and your cat’s weight trend. If the total amount is appropriate, you could divide it into several smaller opportunities or offer part of it through a puzzle feeder. Keep track of the total for the day: extra feeding opportunities should come from the measured ration, not automatically be added to it.
Begging can also become a learned routine if food reliably follows a meow or a trip to the kitchen. A consistent schedule can help distinguish a request from the regular meal time. If begging is new or comes with a change in weight, thirst or appetite, discuss it with a veterinarian rather than assuming it is only a behavior.

Where should you put your cat’s food bowl?
Choose a clean, quiet place where your cat can approach, eat and leave without being startled or blocked. Cats may avoid bowls near household traffic, noise, other animals, dirty containers or a litter box. Watch what happens at mealtime: a location that seems convenient to people may not feel secure to the cat.
- Set the bowl away from the litter box and busy walkways.
- Keep it clean and make sure another pet cannot routinely interrupt or crowd the cat.
- In a multi-cat home, offer separate feeding locations or rooms so each cat can eat without competition.
- Use separate stations to see how much each cat actually eats, especially if one tends to overeat or another is excluded.
AAHA/AAFP guidance notes that cats may prefer eating individually in a quiet area, away from other animals, sudden movement and activity. Multiple food and water stations can help make access more reliable.
Should cats eat alone?
Many cats are more comfortable eating without another animal close by. That does not mean every cat must be isolated; it means each cat should be able to eat without guarding, rushing or being displaced. If you see one cat hovering over another’s bowl, waiting until the other leaves, or eating noticeably less when they share a space, try separate rooms or stations and observe whether access improves.

Separate feeding can also make portion control more practical. It lets you offer different measured amounts when cats have different needs and makes changes in an individual cat’s appetite easier to notice.
Would a puzzle feeder help your cat?
A puzzle feeder can turn some of a cat’s measured food into an opportunity to forage and work for it. AAHA/AAFP describes puzzle feeding as a way to simulate parts of food extraction, stalking and pouncing; the AAFP includes appropriate puzzle feeders among possible feeding-program tools. These are optional enrichment strategies, not requirements or guaranteed fixes for begging, stress or weight gain.

Introduce a puzzle gradually and choose one your cat can use. Put only part of the daily ration in it at first, while keeping food readily available in the usual way so the cat can still eat enough. If the cat avoids the puzzle or cannot get food out, simplify the task or stop using it. Moving small portions to different safe locations is a simpler way to offer foraging without a device.

What food and portions are right?
Choose food labeled nutritionally complete and balanced for the relevant life stage, and account for your cat’s individual health needs. Many wet and dry foods meet nutritional standards; neither format is automatically right for every cat. Wet food is typically 70 to 80 percent water, according to Cornell’s Feline Health Center. Provide fresh water at all times, particularly if your cat eats only dry food.
Use package directions as a starting point, not a precise prescription: they are based on an average cat and may not match yours. Adjust the amount with weight and body condition in mind, ideally with veterinary guidance. Cornell describes a 9-point body condition scale, with 5 as its example of ideal condition; a veterinarian can assess your cat rather than relying on a single photo or a guess.
Do not make a therapeutic diet change for diabetes, kidney disease or another condition without veterinary advice. Cornell also cautions against feeding raw meat, including as treats, because of infectious-disease risk. Milk is generally not recommended because many cats are lactose-intolerant.

When is a change in appetite a health concern?
A cat that refuses food—especially one that is losing weight—should be assessed by a veterinarian. Do not treat appetite loss as simple fussiness or spend days cycling through foods instead of seeking advice. Tell the clinic when the change began, what the cat has eaten and any other changes you have noticed; that information can help guide the next steps.
