Pet telehealth connects you and your cat with veterinary professionals by video, phone, messaging, photos, or shared records. It can help with advice, care coordination, and deciding how urgently your cat needs an in-person visit—but a remote conversation cannot provide a hands-on exam or diagnostic tests. What a clinician can diagnose or prescribe remotely depends on the service and the veterinary rules where you live.

How does online vet care work for cats?

You share information about your cat and the problem, and the service decides what kind of help it can provide. Depending on the provider, that may mean general guidance, triage, follow-up, or clinical care delivered remotely. A video call alone does not guarantee that the clinician can diagnose or treat the condition.

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) describes telehealth as the broader use of technology in veterinary care and communication. Telemedicine is a clinical subset, subject to professional requirements that include the veterinary-client-patient relationship (VCPR). The AVMA says veterinary services should meet the same standard of care whether delivered in person or electronically. AVMA: Connected care—Telehealth in veterinary practice.

In practice, a service may ask about your cat’s history and current signs, review photos or video, and consult existing records. The professional then determines whether remote guidance is appropriate, whether to arrange an appointment, or whether your cat needs prompt in-person care. The exact process varies by service.

What can a virtual vet visit do—and what can’t it do?

It can help with communication and next steps

Remote contact can support triage, care coordination, discussion of existing records, and selected follow-up. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine illustrates how much the scope can vary. Its VetTriage partnership offers live video emergency triage to Companion Animal Hospital clients. Its Camuti Consultation Service discusses cat health and care, but does not diagnose or provide disease-specific treatment recommendations or drug dosages because consultants do not examine the cat directly.

It cannot replace an exam or diagnostic testing

A remote service cannot perform a hands-on physical examination or tests that require a clinic. If an adequate assessment or treatment requires those, an in-person visit is necessary. Cornell’s Feline Health Center says, “All cats should see a veterinarian for regular checkups and any time they are showing signs of illness.” Cornell Feline Health Center: Camuti Consultation Service.

Can a vet diagnose my cat over video or prescribe medication?

Possibly, but neither is guaranteed. A service may offer triage or general advice rather than clinical diagnosis, and remote diagnosis or prescribing depends on the clinician’s assessment, the service’s scope, and applicable local requirements. VCPR rules vary by jurisdiction; do not assume a remote-only relationship can always be established—or that a virtual appointment always permits a prescription.

Before booking, ask the provider what it can do for your cat’s situation, whether it can diagnose or prescribe, and how its service complies with the rules where you live. You can also check with a local veterinary authority. The AVMA identifies VCPR compliance as relevant to telemedicine, but requirements differ by location.

Is online vet care appropriate for an emergency?

A video triage service may help determine whether your cat needs immediate emergency care, but it does not replace that care. If your cat has urgent or worsening symptoms, contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic rather than waiting for a routine virtual appointment.

Cornell says its VetTriage service is available to its clients 24/7 for a fee. It assesses pets by live video chat, with the aim of deciding whether immediate emergency care is needed or whether the pet can be monitored until a scheduled appointment; Cornell says it coordinates the emergency visit when needed. This is a specific service for Cornell hospital clients, not a promise that every provider is always available, responds within minutes, or can treat an emergency remotely. What should you have ready for a virtual vet visit?

Follow the provider’s intake instructions. A concise timeline and useful records can help the professional understand what has changed; send photos, video, or test results if requested.

  • Your cat’s age, known conditions, and current medications.
  • Relevant veterinary records, laboratory results, or images, if available and requested.

How to choose a cat telehealth service

Services differ, so compare what each one actually offers rather than treating “online vet” as a single type of care.

  • Scope: Is it triage, general advice, follow-up, or clinical telemedicine?
  • Relationship requirements: Does it require an existing clinic relationship or VCPR?
  • Availability and format: What are its hours and response method, and how does it handle emergency referrals?
  • Coordination: Can it access your cat’s records or communicate with your regular veterinarian?
  • Fees and follow-up: What does the service charge, and is follow-up included?

For one specific example, Cornell’s Camuti page listed the following fees when checked on October 5, 2026. These are Cornell service prices, not typical market rates, and may change; consult the current Camuti service page for current details.

Camuti consultation type Listed fee and terms (October 5, 2026)
General consultation $44 for Feline Health Center members; $55 for non-members. Members receive a 20% discount on general consultations.
Cardiology or oncology consultation $75.
Behavior consultation $115; listed as unavailable until further notice.
Follow-up One follow-up on the same issue may be requested within four weeks without an additional fee.

Camuti is an information service, not a substitute for an examination when a cat is ill; it does not diagnose or provide disease-specific treatment guidance.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
