Spaying and neutering can reduce behaviors driven by sex hormones, but they do not reliably change a cat’s underlying personality. The clearest expected effects are less urine marking and roaming in male cats, and less heat-related calling in some female cats. Anxiety, hunting, and behaviors with medical, social, or environmental causes may continue.
Which behaviors may change after neutering a male cat?
Neutering, or castration, removes the testes and reduces the source of male sex hormones. It may reduce mounting, sexual interest, urine marking, roaming in search of mates, and some fighting between intact males. Urine odor may also change. These are possibilities, not guaranteed outcomes.
VCA Animal Hospitals says neutering reduces or eliminates spraying in approximately 85% of male cats and reduces roaming in approximately 90% of cases. VCA does not identify a publication year or underlying study for those estimates on the cited page, so they should be treated as guidance rather than a promise for an individual cat. Timing can matter. VCA notes that once sexually dimorphic behaviors have developed, castration may not stop them. Its article states, “The longer a tomcat is allowed to spray and fight (i.e., is not neutered), the less likely neutering will stop these behaviors.” A cat with a retained testicle may continue producing hormones, so discuss possible cryptorchidism with a veterinarian if behavior persists. What behavior changes may follow spaying a female cat?
Spaying removes the ovaries, which are a source of sex hormones. Some vocalization associated with estrus—the heat cycle—and mating may decrease after the procedure. That is a specific potential change, not evidence that spaying generally makes a cat quieter or changes her personality. VCA: Cat Behavior Problems: Vocalization
The American Veterinary Medical Association endorses the recommendation that cats not intended for breeding be gonadectomized by five months of age. Which behaviors usually do not change just because a cat is fixed?
Do not count on surgery to make a cat calmer, friendlier, or less anxious. VCA says castration is unlikely to reduce anxiety or hyperactivity, and hunting is not affected. Temperament reflects factors including genetics, early experience, health, and environment. Some aggression is related to sexual competition; aggression from other causes needs a separate assessment. Not every spray is hormone-driven. Cats may mark because of territorial or social conflict, environmental changes, or distress, and a medical problem can also cause urination outside the litter box. VCA reports that approximately 10% of neutered male cats and 5% of spayed female cats continue to spray; the page does not state a publication year or name the underlying study for these estimates. Arrange a veterinary examination for new or persistent inappropriate urination rather than assuming it is a behavior problem. If marking continues, a veterinarian can help assess possible medical causes and environmental or social triggers. How to set realistic expectations
- Consider the cat’s sex and the behavior: roaming and mating-related marking have clearer links to castration; heat-related calling is a specific possible change after spaying.
- Consider when it began: a behavior established before surgery may persist, even when hormones are no longer driving it.
- Look beyond hormones: pain or illness, stress, territory, and social conflict can cause behaviors that surgery will not resolve.
- Use enrichment for its proper purpose: interactive play and food-dispensing toys can provide exercise, but they are not a treatment for medical problems or a substitute for addressing mating behavior. VCA: Neutering in Cats
