But pursuit or mounting does not prove that mating was completed, and the veterinary sources cited here do not establish whether a female confirmed to be outside estrus will permit or successfully complete mating. Because heat can be subtle or easy to miss, keep intact cats apart if pregnancy is unwanted and contact your veterinarian if mating may have occurred.
Will a male cat mate with a female not in heat?
Male interest and female receptivity are related, but they are not the same thing. An intact male may seek a mate after reaching sexual maturity. A female cat is generally receptive during estrus—the period commonly called heat. The available veterinary guidance does not directly answer whether a female known to be outside estrus will allow or successfully complete mating, so neither “he will never try” nor “mating is impossible” is a safe assumption.
Mounting, chasing, or seeing the cats together cannot confirm that mating occurred. Cats are induced ovulators: mating stimulates ovulation, and multiple matings can occur during an active heat period. That biology does not let an owner determine a female’s cycle status or whether she is pregnant from one observed interaction. VCA Animal Hospitals explains feline breeding and ovulation.
Can a male cat get a female pregnant when she isn’t in heat?
Pregnancy is associated with a female’s reproductive cycle, but a brief observation cannot establish that she is truly outside heat. The sources cited here do not directly test or quantify successful mating with a confirmed non-estrus female. If an intact male and female had access to each other and a litter would be unwanted, do not rely on your impression that she was not in heat; separate them and call your veterinarian promptly for advice specific to the cats.

How do I know if my female cat is in heat?
Common signs
Heat may cause a female cat to become restless and more vocal, rub against people or objects, roll, or raise her hindquarters and present her rear. Her behavior and scent can attract intact males. Signs vary, and their absence during a short period of observation does not confirm that she is not in heat. Cats Protection describes heat behavior and feline reproduction.
When heat can start and return
Sexual maturity can arrive earlier than many owners expect. Cats Protection says females may become sexually mature from four months and males at around seven to nine months. VCA gives a broader typical puberty range of four to twelve months for male cats. These are approximate guidance ranges, not a safe age at which intact cats can be left together.

An unneutered female usually comes into heat every two to three weeks during the breeding season unless she becomes pregnant, according to Cats Protection. Cycle timing varies between cats; VCA also describes a short interval out of heat after an unbred estrus. A female who is quiet now may therefore come into heat again soon. VCA’s guide to feline estrous cycles covers timing and reproductive care.
What should I do if my cats mated?
- Separate them securely. Keep the intact male and female in separate spaces so they cannot mate again. Do not rely on indoor status, age, or the apparent absence of heat as contraception.
- Call your veterinarian promptly. Explain when the cats had access to each other, whether either is neutered, and what you observed. Your vet can advise on the appropriate next steps for your individual cat.
- Watch for possible later pregnancy signs, but do not use them to diagnose. Cats Protection lists weight gain, increased appetite, vomiting, and swollen nipples as possible clues and recommends a veterinary visit if they appear. A vet should assess a suspected pregnancy.
How can I prevent an unwanted litter?
Separate intact cats and discuss neutering
Keep unneutered cats away from one another until they have been neutered. Cats Protection recommends kitten neutering at around four months and advises separating unneutered cats until then, because females can become pregnant from around that age. VCA advises discussing timing with a veterinarian, taking health, behavior, and environment into account; its estrus guidance gives six months as a common recommendation in its context. Ask your own vet what timing is appropriate for your cat rather than treating either age as a universal rule. Cats Protection’s neutering guidance provides its recommendation and separation advice.

Know what neutering changes
Neutering is the general term: female cats are spayed and male cats are castrated. Spaying is the best way to prevent pregnancy, according to VCA. Castration greatly reduces male sexual interest, but some neutered males may continue to show attraction or mating-related behavior; surgery should not be understood as a promise that every such behavior stops immediately. VCA’s discussion of neutering and behavior explains these effects.
Cats Protection’s 2025 leaflet says, “Female cats will allow any male cat, even relatives, to mate with her.” That statement describes females when fertile; it is not evidence that a female will mate outside heat. Cats Protection’s 2025 leaflet on neutering also discusses mating while fertile.
