Do not give a cat meloxicam or repeat a dose unless the treating veterinarian has specifically directed you to do so.
What meloxicam use is approved for cats in the United States?
The FDA-approved feline indication is a single subcutaneous injection before surgery to control postoperative pain and inflammation associated with orthopedic surgery, spay (ovariohysterectomy), or castration. The injection is administered by a veterinarian under the product label. The FDA-hosted cat injection label describes this limited use.
Approval and product instructions vary by country. The information here reflects U.S. FDA labeling; if you live elsewhere, ask your veterinarian about the local product label and approved options.
What is the meloxicam dosage for cats?
The U.S. injection label specifies 0.3 mg/kg (0.14 mg/lb) as a single subcutaneous dose before surgery. This is label information for veterinary administration—not an instruction for an owner to calculate, measure, or give a dose at home. The label recommends a graduated 1 mL syringe for dosing accuracy.

Check the exact prescription and instructions with the treating veterinarian, especially if you were given an oral product or told to give another dose. Do not repeat meloxicam or add another nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) on your own.
Can cats take oral meloxicam?
Oral meloxicam products are not FDA-approved for cats in the United States. The FDA-hosted oral suspension label says not to use that product in cats. FDA guidance on meloxicam use in cats explains that oral products are approved for dogs, not cats, in the United States.

Veterinarians may prescribe drugs extra-label under certain circumstances, but that does not make oral meloxicam a generally approved or safe choice for cats. If your veterinarian prescribed it, confirm the product, amount, schedule, and monitoring plan directly with them before giving it.
Why is repeated meloxicam risky for cats?
The boxed warning in the FDA-hosted cat injection label states: “Repeated use of meloxicam in cats has been associated with acute renal failure and death.” FDA reports many cases of sudden kidney failure and death after cats received repeated doses; it does not provide a denominator or incidence rate for those reports. FDA’s consumer guidance warns against repeated meloxicam use in cats.

The injection label contraindicates additional meloxicam or other NSAIDs in cats. Do not combine meloxicam with another pain reliever—including a medication left over from a prior treatment—unless the veterinarian explicitly directs you to do so.
Which cats may face higher risk?
The injection label contraindicates meloxicam in cats with known hypersensitivity to the drug or pre-existing renal dysfunction. It identifies dehydration and existing renal, cardiovascular, or hepatic dysfunction as risk factors for NSAID adverse events. Cats receiving diuretics and cats exposed to potentially kidney-toxic drugs or anesthetic drugs that may affect kidney blood flow also require particular caution.

The label says safety has not been evaluated in cats younger than four months, breeding cats, or pregnant or lactating queens. It does not recommend use in cats with bleeding disorders because safety has not been established for those patients. Safety has also not been established for intravenous or intramuscular administration in cats. The veterinarian can assess these factors and determine whether treatment and monitoring are appropriate; the label recommends perioperative monitoring and fluids to help reduce potential kidney complications.

Contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice any of these signs after a cat receives meloxicam. The label’s post-approval adverse-event reports also include kidney-related findings such as azotemia, elevated creatinine or phosphorus, and renal failure; gastrointestinal effects such as anorexia; lethargy or depression; and anemia. Death has been reported among outcomes. These are reported events, not a prediction that an individual cat will experience them.
If you suspect an adverse drug reaction, contact the veterinarian and ask about reporting it to the drug company or through FDA’s animal drug reporting process. FDA’s NSAID guidance for animal owners emphasizes discussing prescription NSAIDs with a veterinarian and contacting them if problems occur.
What other NSAIDs are approved for feline postoperative pain?
FDA identifies two NSAIDs approved for short-term postoperative pain in cats in the United States. Their approved duration and routes differ:

These are regulatory distinctions, not a recommendation to switch medicines. FDA says no NSAIDs are approved for long-term use in cats. A veterinarian should choose treatment based on the cat and procedure. FDA’s list of approved NSAIDs for animals provides the regulatory context.
