The U.S. maple-flavor label directs an initial dose of ½–1 teaspoon for 2–3 days, then ¼–½ teaspoon 2–3 times a week. Those are label directions, not a dose tailored to an individual cat. Frequent hairballs, repeated vomiting, unproductive retching, lethargy or appetite loss call for veterinary advice rather than simply more gel.
What is Laxatone for cats?
The cited U.S. label describes maple-flavor Laxatone as an oral gel for cats, recommended to aid in the elimination and prevention of hairballs. Per 6-gram teaspoon, it contains white petrolatum USP (1,285 mg), soybean oil (285 mg) and light mineral oil NF (203 mg). The soybean oil is listed as providing 27 mg omega-6, 9 mg omega-9 and 4 mg omega-3 fatty acids.
Other ingredients listed on that label are cane molasses, corn syrup, gelatin by-products, malt syrup, maple flavor, sodium benzoate and water. The record identifies Vetoquinol N.-A. Inc. in Canada as the maker and Vetoquinol USA, Inc. as the distributor, and displays a 120.5 g (4.25 oz) package. It was updated December 23, 2019; check the current package for its flavor, ingredients and directions, since this information is specific to the cited maple-flavor label. Read the DailyMed label.
DailyMed hosts the label; that does not mean FDA has approved the product. The label itself states: “This drug has not been found by FDA to be safe and effective, and this labeling has not been approved by FDA.” The cited material does not establish a clinical success rate.

Laxatone dosage for cats: what the label says
The maple-flavor U.S. label gives this oral schedule:
| Stage | Label direction |
|---|---|
| Initial | ½–1 teaspoon for 2–3 days |
| After the initial period | ¼–½ teaspoon 2–3 times a week |
To encourage taste interest, the label suggests putting a small amount on the cat’s nose or paws. These directions do not account for a cat’s individual health, other conditions or medicines. Ask your veterinarian how much to give if your cat has a health problem, takes medication, or has symptoms that concern you; do not use the label schedule as a substitute for that advice.

Laxatone side effects and safety cautions
The cited label does not list common side effects or report how often adverse effects occur. A product-specific reaction rate is therefore not established in the available label information; a list or percentage of “typical” side effects cannot be inferred from it.
- The label says to stop administration and consult a veterinarian if the cat’s condition worsens or does not improve.
- It says safe use in pregnant animals or animals intended for breeding has not been proven.
- It is for animal use only. Keep it out of reach of children and animals; in case of accidental overdose, contact a health professional immediately.
When hairballs may signal a bigger problem
Hairballs can happen as cats groom, but not every episode of vomiting or retching should be assumed to be an ordinary hairball. Merck notes that a hairball can irritate the stomach or block the digestive tract, and advises veterinary attention for repeated vomiting or frequent hairballs. Merck Veterinary Manual: Hairballs in Cats.

Cornell advises contacting a veterinarian without delay if a cat is lethargic and refuses food for more than about a day, or has repeated unproductive retching. Treat these as reasons to seek assessment, not as symptoms to manage by increasing Laxatone. Cornell Feline Health Center: Hairballs.
