There is no one-size-fits-all cat dose: the right amount, schedule, and formulation depend on why it is being used and on the individual cat. Give it only as prescribed by your veterinarian, and tell the clinic about kidney or liver disease and every other medicine your cat takes.
Why veterinarians prescribe gabapentin for cats
Gabapentin is an anti-seizure and pain medication. VCA Animal Hospitals describes its use with other medications for seizures and chronic pain, especially nerve pain, in dogs and cats. It is also used in cats to reduce fear and anxiety associated with veterinary visits. VCA characterizes seizure and pain treatment in cats as off-label or extra-label use; approval and prescribing rules can vary by jurisdiction. VCA’s gabapentin reference was last updated September 25, 2024.
For appointment stress, a veterinarian may prescribe gabapentin when a cat’s fear is severe. It is not appropriate to give a sedating medicine without checking with the veterinarian if you have concerns about the cat’s current health. VCA’s guide to reducing stress during veterinary visits discusses this use.
Gabapentin dosage and how long it takes to work
There is no universal feline dose established for every reason a cat might receive gabapentin. Your veterinarian must set the dose, frequency, formulation, and timing for your cat. Do not use a dose from a study, another pet’s prescription, or an online calculator as a substitute.

VCA says gabapentin generally takes effect in about one to two hours, but an individual cat’s response is not guaranteed. For veterinary-visit anxiety, keep the cat calm while giving the medicine and for the following hour; excitement may reduce its anti-anxiety effect.
Why one pre-visit study dose is not a general dosing rule
A 2017 randomized, blinded crossover trial studied 20 pet cats with a history of fractious behavior or stress during veterinary examinations. Its protocol was one 100 mg capsule by mouth 90 minutes before the cat was placed in a carrier. In those study cats, that fixed amount corresponded to 13.0–29.4 mg/kg. The researchers reported reduced stress and aggression and better compliance during transport and examination. Those figures describe a particular study protocol, not a recommendation for another cat or for pain, seizures, kidney disease, or a different situation. The study abstract is indexed by PubMed.

Side effects and veterinary examinations
Sleepiness or sedation and incoordination are recognized possible side effects. Contact your veterinarian if you notice a concerning effect; seek veterinary help promptly if you suspect an overdose or adverse reaction. VCA says a short-acting dose should stop working within 24 hours, although effects may last longer in cats with kidney or liver disease.
Gabapentin can also affect what a veterinarian observes during a neurological examination. In a 2023 prospective, randomized, blinded study of 35 healthy client-owned cats, pre-appointment gabapentin affected several neurological findings, including proprioceptive ataxia and paw-placement or postural reactions. This does not mean every cat will show those signs. Tell the clinic when your cat received a dose if a neurological evaluation is planned. The full study is available through PubMed Central.

Kidney disease, pregnancy, and other medicines
Kidney disease calls for caution, and gabapentin’s effects may last longer in animals with kidney or liver disease. Make sure the prescribing veterinarian knows about a diagnosis or concern, particularly for an older cat. Do not adjust the dose yourself.
VCA also advises caution during pregnancy or lactation and when gabapentin is used alongside certain medicines, including antacids, hydrocodone, and morphine. Tell the veterinarian about all prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, supplements, and herbal products your cat receives.
