For the U.S. FRONTLINE Plus for Cats label, the dose is one complete 0.50 mL applicator per cat, applied to the skin in one spot at the base of the neck. Do not apply more than once per month or reapply within 30 days. The label excludes kittens under 8 weeks old and cats weighing less than 1.5 pounds. These directions are specific to the U.S. product label dated September 2, 2014—not every FRONTLINE product or a dog formulation. Check the package you have and ask your veterinarian whether it is appropriate for your cat.

How much Frontline should I use on my cat?

The U.S. EPA label for FRONTLINE Plus for Cats specifies one 0.50 mL applicator per cat. Its active ingredients are fipronil 9.8% and (S)-methoprene 11.8%. This is a fixed, labeled applicator dose; do not calculate a different dose from your cat’s weight or use this direction for another formulation. Read the EPA product label.

Apply it to the skin, not the coat

  1. Part the hair at the base of the neck, above the shoulder blades, until you can see the skin.
  2. Place the applicator tip near the skin and squeeze the entire contents onto the skin in one spot.
  3. Keep the cat from ingesting the product, and prevent other animals from licking the treated area. Avoid touching the application site until it is dry.

The label says not to use more than one application per cat per month and not to reapply within 30 days. Do not combine treatments or shorten the interval based on these directions.

Which cats should not receive this product?

The cited U.S. label says not to use this product on kittens younger than 8 weeks or cats weighing less than 1.5 pounds. It is for cats only; the label specifically excludes rabbits and other animals. EPA consumer guidance also says to use flea and tick products only on the animal species and size or weight specified on the label, and warns against applying dog products to cats. What are the side effects of Frontline for cats?

The cited label warns that a cat may have temporary irritation at the application site. If signs persist or become more severe within a few days, it says to consult a veterinarian immediately.

EPA advises monitoring pets for side effects or sensitivity, especially after a first application. If your pet has an adverse reaction, EPA’s general guidance is to bathe the pet with mild soap, rinse with large amounts of water, and contact a veterinarian and/or the National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) right away about whether further steps are needed. Keep the package and applicator available so the product and its directions can be identified. This general guidance does not replace emergency veterinary care or advice specific to the product. For human exposure, follow the package’s first-aid instructions and seek medical or poison-control advice as directed there.

How long does the label say it works, and what does it treat?

The EPA label describes use against fleas, flea eggs and larvae, ticks, and chewing lice. It claims adult-flea insecticidal efficacy for four weeks and prevention of development of flea stages originating from eggs laid by adult fleas for six weeks. It describes tick efficacy as at least one month and recommends monthly application when tick control is needed. These are claims on the 2014 product label, not a guarantee of an individual cat’s outcome or directions for other FRONTLINE products.
