Fenbendazole is an oral antiparasitic used against certain worms and, in some circumstances, Giardia. There is no single dose or course for every cat: the right regimen depends on the parasite, the specific product and its concentration, and local authorization. Ask a veterinarian to confirm the diagnosis and set the dose and duration before giving it.
What is fenbendazole, and can I give it to my cat?
Fenbendazole is a benzimidazole antiparasitic. Whether it is authorized for cats depends on the product, the intended parasite and the country. For example, the UK product information cited below includes feline directions for certain intestinal worms, while the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) says no drugs are approved for feline giardiasis in the United States. A veterinarian may recommend a treatment outside a product’s label, but that is not the same as a universally approved cat treatment.
Do not give a cat a dose calculated from a dog product, a different formulation or an online dosing example. The veterinarian needs to know the suspected or confirmed parasite, your cat’s age and health, its accurate weight, and the exact product and concentration. The published doses below are examples tied to specific indications and jurisdictions, not instructions to self-treat.
What is the fenbendazole dose for cats?
There is no universal cat dose. These examples differ by parasite and source; none should be transferred to a different product or treatment purpose without veterinary direction.

| Context | Published regimen | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Routine treatment of adult cats for intestinal worms | 100 mg/kg orally once | UK product information revised October 2025; applies to the product information and jurisdiction described there, not to every cat product or country. Veterinary Medicines Directorate product information. |
| Weaned kittens over 12 weeks and under six months | 50 mg/kg orally once daily for three days | UK product information revised October 2025. It says very small or unweaned kittens should receive a suitable licensed product for cats up to 12 weeks of age instead. Veterinary Medicines Directorate product information. |
| Feline Giardia treatment guidance | 50 mg/kg orally every 24 hours for five days | CAPC reports limited feline treatment data and no drugs approved for giardiasis in cats in the United States. This is parasite-specific guidance, not a routine deworming course. CAPC Giardia guidance. |
| UK feline intestinal-helminth options in a reference table | 100 mg/kg once or 50 mg/kg daily for three days | The Merck Veterinary Manual identifies fenbendazole as approved only in the UK in its table of treatments for feline intestinal helminths; consult the table for susceptible parasites and distinguish these options from products approved in the US and UK. Merck Veterinary Manual. |
The figures are not interchangeable: the five-day Giardia guidance is a different regimen for a different parasite context, and CAPC specifically notes limited data in cats. A cat with no symptoms may not need Giardia treatment. The veterinarian should decide whether treatment is appropriate and whether testing or follow-up is needed.
How should fenbendazole be given?
Follow the exact directions from your veterinarian and the specific product leaflet. UK product information describes oral administration, either sprinkled onto food or given by mouth, and emphasizes accurate body-weight determination. VCA notes that fenbendazole may come as oral granules or liquid suspension; measure liquids carefully and do not substitute concentrations or formulations when calculating an amount. VCA: Fenbendazole.

What are the side effects of fenbendazole in cats?
VCA lists salivation, vomiting and diarrhea as possible adverse effects. It also describes rare allergic reactions and rare reports of pancytopenia when fenbendazole was used longer than recommended. Contact a veterinarian promptly if you suspect a reaction or overdose. VCA: Fenbendazole.

Product statements and studies have different limits. A Veterinary Medicines Directorate leaflet for the specific product Parazole, revised August 2025, says “None known” for adverse events in dogs and cats; that statement is about that product’s leaflet, not a guarantee that every cat will tolerate every fenbendazole product or regimen. The leaflet asks users to contact a veterinarian about side effects, including unlisted ones, or suspected lack of effect. Parazole product leaflet.
A 2000 safety study enrolled 28 healthy domestic short-hair cats aged six to seven months. Treatment groups received 50, 150 or 250 mg/kg orally every 24 hours for nine days. The study abstract reports no observed adverse reactions, laboratory results within reference limits and no gross or histologic lesions in cats examined at necropsy. This small study in healthy young cats does not establish safety for cats of every age or health status, or for every indication and course. What does the FDA warning mean for cats?
The FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine reported 12 canine cases of bone marrow hypoplasia or pancytopenia associated with extra-label fenbendazole use beyond the labeled three-day duration, as of October 20, 2023. The reported courses in those dog cases lasted five to 14 days. The FDA also noted a few reports in other species, but its 12-case count is not a feline incidence figure and does not establish a risk rate for cats. The letter says fenbendazole is safe and effective when used at the labeled dose and duration for labeled indications. FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine, October 20, 2023.
The practical point is not to extend or repeat a course on your own. Follow the prescribed duration and check with the veterinarian before making any change, especially if the cat is unwell or treatment appears not to work.

When is follow-up testing needed?
For suspected or confirmed Giardia, CAPC recommends follow-up fecal flotation 24–48 hours after therapy. It cautions that ELISA and PCR tests may remain positive for variable periods, so those results should not be used alone to conclude that infection has returned or treatment has failed. Your veterinarian can interpret results alongside symptoms and the testing method. CAPC Giardia guidance.
How to compare a recommended product or regimen
