Denamarin comes in two feline tablet formulations with different amounts of SAMe and different labeled dosing schedules. Check the exact product name on your cat’s package before giving a dose: the directions for coated tablets are not the same as those for Denamarin Advanced. Your veterinarian should set the plan for your cat.
Which Denamarin formulation do you have?
Both products combine SAMe with a silybin-phosphatidylcholine complex. The manufacturer describes Denamarin as a supplement intended to support healthy liver function in cats and dogs; it is not a diagnosis or a substitute for treating the cause of a liver problem. Nutramax’s overview of Denamarin describes that intended use.

These are the manufacturer’s listed directions, not a dose recommendation for an individual cat. Do not switch products or transfer one formulation’s schedule to the other based on tablet size or SAMe amount. The coated tablets page notes that changes should be made in full-tablet increments on a veterinarian’s recommendation; Advanced hard tablets are available exclusively through a veterinarian.

How should you give Denamarin to a cat?
- Confirm the formulation. Check whether the package says coated tablets or Advanced hard tablets; their labeled schedules differ.
- Follow the veterinarian’s prescribed plan. Nutramax says the veterinarian should determine the initial amount and may adjust it according to the pet’s response and status. Do not alter the dose or substitute a formulation on your own.
- Give it before food. Both product pages direct administration on an empty stomach at least one hour before a meal.
- Use the formulation-specific instructions. Do not generally break the coated tablet. After an Advanced tablet, give a small amount of water; if giving a pill is not possible, the manufacturer permits using a small amount of food.
For ongoing care, the manufacturer recommends veterinary follow-up examinations and blood or other laboratory work. At home, keep track of your cat’s attitude, appetite and activity. If your cat vomits, refuses food or seems unwell, contact your veterinarian rather than improvising a dose change. Nutramax’s FAQ discusses veterinary monitoring and administration.
What side effects are known in cats?
Nutramax says the ingredients are well tolerated in cats and dogs and that Denamarin has “no known side-effects.” This is the manufacturer’s general statement, not a quantified estimate of how often feline side effects occur; the product information does not provide a feline adverse-event incidence figure. It also does not mean a reaction is impossible.

If your cat vomits, stops eating or appears unwell while taking Denamarin, contact the veterinarian who prescribed it. That veterinarian can assess the symptoms and decide whether the plan should change; do not independently skip, repeat or adjust a dose. The manufacturer’s FAQ says the active ingredients have been shown to be well tolerated in cats and dogs.
