Cat chemotherapy has no single price or standard recovery time: both depend on the cancer, the drugs and schedule, and your cat’s response. Many cats receive treatment as outpatients, and veterinary chemotherapy is planned around maintaining quality of life. Ask the veterinary oncologist for an itemized estimate, a monitoring plan, and written instructions for managing side effects and handling medication or waste at home.

How much does chemotherapy for a cat cost?

There is no established U.S. national average for cat chemotherapy in the sources cited here. The following figures are examples published by North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Hospital, not typical or guaranteed totals. Its estimates depend on the cat’s response and exclude additional supportive care and hospitalization.

Treatment example Published estimate What the estimate covers
Feline lymphoma treated with CHOP $6,500–$9,500 over six months NC State describes a 29-week plan that alternates three chemotherapy drugs—two injectable and one oral—weekly or every other week. Oral chemotherapy may be given at home. The estimate excludes additional supportive care and hospitalization. NC State Veterinary Hospital
Feline lymphoma treated with oral CCNU $600–$800 per treatment At least five treatments are described; supportive care and hospitalization are excluded. NC State Veterinary Hospital
Feline mast cell tumor treated with vinblastine (IV) or lomustine (oral) $600–$900 per treatment For higher-grade, nonresectable, or metastatic tumors; supportive care and hospitalization are excluded. NC State Veterinary Hospital
Feline mast cell tumor treated with Palladia $600–$800 per month Varies with patient weight; supportive care and hospitalization are excluded. NC State Veterinary Hospital
Small-cell feline lymphoma treated with chlorambucil and prednisolone Varies by pharmacy NC State describes an every-other-day oral regimen; the page does not state a set total. NC State Veterinary Hospital

Cornell’s general veterinary oncology FAQ—not a cat-specific price guide—says regimens can range from several hundred dollars for palliative oral chemotherapy to several thousand dollars over three to six months. It notes that tumor site and size, treatment choice, and how well an animal tolerates treatment affect the total. Cornell Feline Health Center

What to include in a written estimate

Ask the clinic to price the expected course rather than just the medication or first visit. Request separate estimates for the initial oncology consultation, diagnostics and staging, bloodwork, each drug and administration, rechecks, take-home medicines, and any items excluded from the estimate—especially emergency support or hospitalization. If cost is a constraint, ask whether a less intensive or palliative protocol is medically appropriate for your cat’s diagnosis and goals.

What side effects can a cat have?

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) says its guideline summary estimates that about 10–15% of cats experience chemotherapy side effects and that severe reactions affect fewer than 5%. Those figures are not a guarantee for an individual cat. AAHA emphasizes that veterinary chemotherapy aims to manage cancer while preserving quality of life: “The primary goal of chemotherapy in veterinary oncology is to maintain the best possible quality of life for pets while effectively managing their cancer.” AAHA 2026 Oncology Guidelines for Dogs and Cats

Stomach and appetite changes

Possible effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, reduced appetite, and lethargy. AAHA says gastrointestinal toxicity is less common in cats than dogs and is usually self-limiting, averaging three days; an individual drug or protocol can differ. Tell the oncology team about even mild appetite changes. The team may recommend anti-nausea or appetite support, diarrhea medication, or a treatment adjustment. Give any prescribed medicines only as directed.

Low blood counts and infection risk

Chemotherapy can suppress bone marrow, lowering white blood cells and increasing infection risk. The timing of the lowest counts (the nadir) depends on the drug. For example, AAHA lists a typical neutrophil nadir of 7–28 days after carboplatin in cats; that window is not a schedule for every chemotherapy drug. Ask which signs should prompt an urgent call and what blood tests your cat needs.

Monitoring depends on the treatment plan

Testing is tailored to the cat, cancer, and protocol. For feline lymphoma, NC State describes baseline evaluation that includes a complete blood count, chemistry panel, FeLV/FIV testing, urinalysis, and imaging to assess disease extent and organ function. Your oncologist can explain which tests apply to your cat and when they are needed.

How long does recovery take?

There is no universal recovery period after chemotherapy. Some cats have mild effects or none; when stomach or appetite effects occur, they may resolve over a few days, while blood-count changes can occur later. The timing depends on the drug, so ask the oncologist when to watch most closely after each treatment and when to report a change.

The treatment course may involve repeated outpatient visits over weeks or months. For context, NC State’s example CHOP lymphoma protocol runs 29 weeks, while its CCNU lymphoma option is given every three weeks for at least five treatments. These are lymphoma-specific schedules, not a guide to every cat’s treatment.

When a side effect needs veterinary care

AAHA notes that nausea, appetite loss, and diarrhea can often be managed at home when recognized early. Dehydration or an inadequate response to oral medication may require veterinary assessment. In severe cases, AAHA describes 24–48 hours of hospital supportive care, such as IV fluids, injectable antiemetics, and sometimes antibiotics; this is an example of severe-case care, not an expected recovery time for every cat. Get the treating team’s specific fever, appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and emergency-call instructions rather than relying on a generic threshold.

Temporary whisker loss can occur. Significant body-hair loss is uncommon in cats, according to NC State and the University of Tennessee clinic FAQ. University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center

How should you compare treatment options?

If the oncologist offers more than one approach, compare the plans for your cat’s particular cancer rather than comparing drug prices alone. Cancer subtype and location can affect the plan and prognosis; treatment may aim for control, remission, or palliation, and chemotherapy is not a universal cure.

  • Diagnosis and goal: What subtype, location, and stage is being treated, and what is the goal of each option?
  • Expected benefit: What is known—and uncertain—about the likely benefit for this specific diagnosis?
  • Schedule and route: Which drugs are oral or injectable, how often are they given, how long is the course, and how many clinic visits are expected?
  • Monitoring and side effects: What tests are needed, which effects are most relevant to this protocol, and how will the team manage them?
  • Full cost: What are the estimated diagnostics, treatments, rechecks, supportive medicines, and potential hospitalization costs?
  • Home responsibilities: Will you give medication at home, and what handling and waste precautions does that require?

How do you handle chemotherapy medicine and waste safely?

Precautions depend on the specific medication. Follow the prescribing clinic’s written directions over general advice, and ask for clarification before handling a drug or cleaning up waste if instructions are missing.

As a source-specific example, the University of Tennessee clinic FAQ tells owners to wear nitrile gloves when handling oral chemotherapy, never to crush or split pills or open capsules, and to wear gloves when cleaning up after the pet for three days following treatment. It advises bagging disposable cleanup materials and washing hands. AAHA also advises chemotherapy-resistant disposable gloves for handling some oral medications and a pet’s bodily fluids or waste. Ask your clinic which gloves, cleanup steps, and time period apply to your cat’s medication.
