Cat constipation means difficult or infrequent passage of typically hard, dry stool. The right treatment depends on why it is happening and how severe it is: some cats need hydration or a veterinarian-guided diet change, while others need clinic treatment. If your cat is straining, first make sure the problem is not trouble urinating—urinary blockage is an emergency.

What constipation looks like in cats

Constipated cats may pass stool less often than usual, strain or have difficulty defecating, and produce hard, dry feces. More seriously affected cats may also become lethargic, lose interest in food, vomit, seem depressed, or show abdominal discomfort. These signs can reflect significant illness, so contact a veterinarian promptly if they occur.

Why a cat may become constipated

Constipation develops when feces remain in the colon and become dry and difficult to pass. Causes and contributing factors include:

  • Not drinking enough water or becoming dehydrated.
  • Fur or other indigestible material in the stool.
  • A foreign body, mass, obstruction, or narrowing of the passage, including pelvic narrowing.
  • Painful defecation or medication side effects.
  • Neurologic problems or impaired movement of the colon.
  • Cases in which no specific cause is identified.

Persistent or severe constipation can progress to obstipation, meaning intractable constipation, or megacolon, in which the colon becomes abnormally dilated and its motility is impaired. These are more serious conditions than an occasional hard stool. The Merck Veterinary Manual’s review, updated June 2025, describes constipation as common in cats: Merck Veterinary Manual: Constipation, Obstipation, and Megacolon in Small Animals.

Straining can mean a urinary emergency

Repeated trips to the litter box and straining do not prove that a cat is constipated. Difficulty urinating can look similar. If your cat is producing little or no urine, seek urgent veterinary care now rather than trying a constipation remedy. A urethral obstruction requires immediate treatment, according to Merck Veterinary Manual: Urinary Stones in Cats.

There is no universally established number of hours without a bowel movement that safely separates home monitoring from an emergency. If your cat is worsening, seems unwell, or you are unsure whether it is urinating, call a veterinarian promptly.

How a veterinarian diagnoses constipation

The veterinarian will ask about your cat’s stool, eating, drinking, urination, medicines, and general health, then examine the cat and assess for retained feces and possible causes. Depending on the case, evaluation may include:

  • Abdominal X-rays to assess retained stool and look for an obstruction.
  • Blood tests and urinalysis to check for dehydration or other illness.
  • Ultrasound, a rectal examination, or additional tests when indicated.

These findings help determine whether a diet adjustment or medication is appropriate, or whether the cat needs more intensive treatment. See VCA Animal Hospitals: Constipation in Cats and Merck Veterinary Manual: Disorders of the Stomach and Intestines in Cats.

How cat constipation is treated

Treatment is chosen for the cause and severity rather than from a single remedy that suits every cat. A veterinarian may recommend one or more of these approaches:

Treatment When it may be used What to know
Hydration support When dehydration or insufficient fluid intake is contributing The veterinarian may advise ways to support hydration or provide fluids, depending on the cat’s condition.
Diet adjustment or fiber For selected cats after assessment Fiber is not suitable for every cat; hydration and the underlying cause matter.
Prescribed laxative or motility medication When appropriate for the diagnosed problem Use only under veterinary direction; the type and safety depend on the individual cat.
Enema or manual fecal removal For more serious retained stool or impaction These are veterinary treatments; fecal removal may require anesthesia.
Surgery In some cases of megacolon that do not respond to medical management A veterinarian considers this for severe, persistent disease.

Some cats with severe or chronic constipation may need hospitalization. The veterinarian’s examination matters because treatment that is unsuitable for the cause—or given to a dehydrated or obstructed cat—can be unsafe.

What you can safely do at home

Make fresh water readily available and note changes in your cat’s stool, appetite, behavior, and urination. Tell your veterinarian about any medicines and relevant changes in diet or litter-box access. Follow the treatment plan they recommend rather than trying to force a bowel movement yourself.

Do not give human-use laxatives or administer an enema unless a veterinarian specifically directs you. Merck warns that human-use laxatives can be very dangerous for pets. Fiber also needs care: Merck advises that cats be well hydrated before fiber supplementation, and too much fiber can have disadvantages. A product such as plain psyllium husk powder may be considered for some cats as a veterinarian-guided dietary addition, but it is not a general cure and cannot treat an obstruction, obstipation, or megacolon. Do not assume pumpkin or any other home remedy is appropriate without veterinary guidance.

When to call a veterinarian

Seek urgent care if your cat is producing little or no urine, since urinary obstruction needs immediate treatment. Contact a veterinarian promptly for constipation accompanied by vomiting, lethargy, poor appetite, abdominal discomfort, worsening signs, or uncertainty about whether your cat is urinating or defecating. For a milder change in stool, ask your veterinarian for advice if it persists or recurs; a safe response depends on the cause and the cat’s overall condition.
