These enrichment steps may help occupy your cat, but they cannot explain every sudden change in activity or guarantee the behavior will stop. How to calm a hyper cat
Start with activities that let your cat play, explore, and rest on their own terms. Try one or two changes at a time and notice what your cat chooses. A wand toy may suit a cat who likes to chase; a stable perch may be more appealing to one who prefers watching from above.
There is no universal play-session length established for every energetic cat. Aim for a consistent routine that suits your cat and household, and stop or change the activity if your cat seems frightened or overstimulated.

2. Let your cat stalk, chase, and pounce
Choose games that allow your cat to engage in predatory behaviors such as stalking and pouncing. Keep hands and feet out of the game so they do not become targets.
3. Rotate toys

8. Give a frightened or overstimulated cat space
If your cat appears scared or overwhelmed, provide a quiet, safe place and time to recover. Do not force handling or interaction. Environmental management and a safe retreat are recommended approaches in fear-related situations by VCA Animal Hospitals.
9. Make play safe
Supervise play. Put away string toys and toys with parts your cat could swallow after the session, and check toys for damage. Do not encourage chasing your fingers or toes.
10. Ask a veterinarian when the pattern is concerning
Contact your veterinarian if the high activity is a sudden or marked change, continues alongside signs of distress, involves aggression you cannot safely manage, or does not improve after you make appropriate environmental changes. A veterinarian can assess whether a medical issue or a behavior concern needs attention. Do not give your cat human medication; medication choices and dosing should be discussed with a veterinarian.

Choose enrichment that suits your cat
Different options provide different kinds of activity. Consider what your cat enjoys, whether they can use the item, how closely it needs to be supervised, and whether it fits safely in your home.

When calming tips are not enough
Enrichment can help meet a cat’s needs for play, exploration, food-seeking, and rest, but it does not identify why an individual cat is unusually active. Sudden or ongoing behavior changes warrant veterinary advice rather than an assumption that the cat simply has excess energy. For behavior that is difficult to manage or potentially unsafe, a veterinarian can advise on next steps and whether a behavior specialist is appropriate.
Pheromone products are sometimes discussed for particular stress situations, including some veterinary-visit contexts, but they are not a universal fix for high energy. VCA’s guidance on pheromones and veterinary visits describes a more limited context than ordinary activity at home.
