That gives the hamster room to explore, while leaving space for bedding and furnishings. Blue Cross recommends this size without distinguishing between hamster species and says bigger is better.
How big should a hamster cage be?
Use 100 × 50 × 50 cm as a practical minimum target for the enclosure. The floor dimensions equal 5,000 cm², or about 775 in². Measure the usable main floor inside the enclosure—not its external measurements or the combined area of shelves and levels. A single, uninterrupted floor makes it easier to arrange furnishings and provide bedding. Blue Cross recommends this size and says bigger is better.
What to look for in an enclosure
- Solid floor: Choose a solid base rather than wire mesh. The RSPCA says mesh floors can cause foot problems and recommends a solid floor that allows bedding to be provided.
- Room for deep bedding: Check the enclosure’s internal height and depth so you can add a thick layer of suitable bedding and nesting material without losing too much usable floor space.
- Ventilation and security: The enclosure must have suitable airflow and prevent escapes. Blue Cross says tanks or aquariums are ideal because they allow deep bedding and reduce escape risk through bars; make sure any tank remains suitably ventilated and securely covered.
- Space for furnishings: Check that essential furnishings fit without crowding the main floor. A large marketed capacity or multiple levels does not replace a sufficiently large continuous floor.
Does the recommended size vary by hamster species?
The Blue Cross 100 × 50 × 50 cm recommendation does not specify separate dimensions for Syrian, Chinese, or dwarf hamsters. Housing others together is a separate question from enclosure size: the RSPCA says Syrian and Chinese hamsters should live alone. Some dwarf hamsters may sometimes be housed in stable pairs or trios, but they do not need companions. See the RSPCA’s guidance on hamster company.
Why are some published minimums much smaller?
UK government licensing guidance for businesses selling animals lists minimum enclosure specifications of 750 cm² of area, with at least 25 cm of height and 25 cm of depth, for dwarf hamsters and one Syrian hamster. These are regulatory minimums in guidance for local authorities licensing pet sellers; they are not the Blue Cross recommendation for a pet’s home. Do not use the seller-licensing figures as a substitute for the larger home-care target. Check applicable animal-welfare guidance in your location, since requirements and recommendations can differ.

How to compare cages before buying
- Check the manufacturer’s internal floor dimensions and confirm the main floor is at least 100 × 50 cm.
- Confirm that the floor is solid and that there is enough internal depth for bedding and nesting material.
- Make sure the enclosure has appropriate ventilation and can be secured against escapes.
- Check that furnishings fit while leaving a substantial, continuous area of floor available.
