A “second chance” can mean thoughtful veterinary care and careful risk management—not a promise that antibiotics will cure the infection or remove every chance of transmission. Because no details are established here about this puppy’s test, symptoms, or circumstances, its diagnosis and outlook must be determined by its veterinarian.
What canine brucellosis means for a puppy
Brucella canis can infect dogs without causing obvious signs. Infection may persist for years, and an apparently well puppy may still be infected or infectious. A healthy appearance alone cannot rule it out.
Puppies may acquire the infection from an affected mother before birth or through contact with birthing materials. Other puppies in the litter may seem healthy at first and develop signs later. A veterinarian can advise whether littermates or the mother need assessment.
How a diagnosis is assessed
Veterinarians may test blood and, depending on the circumstances, other samples such as birthing material, semen, joint fluid, or lymph-node fluid. A rapid lateral-flow test may be used initially, but it is less accurate than laboratory testing. The UK government’s owner guidance notes that a negative antibody test may not exclude infection if the dog has not yet had time to develop detectable antibodies. A positive result can indicate current or previous infection, so a specialist should interpret it alongside the dog’s history and other findings.

Possible signs include reproductive problems, swollen lymph nodes, back pain related to spinal infection, eye inflammation, an enlarged spleen, reduced activity or appetite, coat changes, and behavior changes. These signs can have other causes; none confirms brucellosis on its own. A veterinarian should assess the puppy rather than infer the disease from symptoms alone.
Can a puppy with brucellosis be cured?
Antibiotics do not reliably eliminate canine brucellosis. The UK guidance says treatment is not recommended because the chance of success is poor. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes the infection as non-curable and warns that dogs may continue shedding bacteria even when treatment is attempted. Treatment can be prolonged, costly, and associated with side effects and antimicrobial-resistance concerns; apparent improvement does not establish that infection has cleared.

For that reason, a puppy should not be called cured based simply on completing medication or looking better. The veterinarian can explain what treatment might or might not achieve in the individual case and how to manage ongoing transmission risk.
What happens after a dog tests positive?
There is no single decision that fits every dog and household. The veterinarian should discuss the test interpretation, the puppy’s health and living situation, and practical steps to reduce exposure. Depending on the case and local rules, options may include euthanasia, neutering, or other risk-management measures.

Neutering can reduce reproductive spread, but it cannot prevent every non-sexual route of transmission. The Animal and Plant Health Agency’s veterinary staff guidance, updated 17 November 2025, states: “Euthanasia is the only way to completely eliminate all future risk of disease transmission from the dog.” That statement concerns eliminating transmission risk; owners may discuss other approaches with their veterinary team, while recognizing that they reduce rather than erase risk.
How brucellosis spreads—and what people can do
Reproductive fluids and tissues—including semen and material from birth or abortion—are important routes of dog-to-dog spread. UK veterinary guidance also describes possible spread through urine and other fluids, and household dogs may face greater exposure. People are more likely to be exposed when handling reproductive or birthing products, blood, or urine. UK owner guidance says most ordinary contact with an infected dog is unlikely to make a person unwell, but anyone concerned about a possible exposure should contact the relevant local public health authority.

The CDC recommends practical precautions when caring for an infected dog:
- Wear gloves when handling the dog’s urine or feces; use disposable protective gloves for waste cleanup.
- Put excrement in disposable bags and dispose of it safely.
- Wash hands thoroughly after handling the dog or cleaning up waste.
- Disinfect surfaces the dog uses.
- Prevent exposure of other people and animals, following the veterinarian’s instructions for movement, separation, and care.
These steps are precautions, not a guarantee that a home environment is risk-free. Ask the veterinarian how to handle any reproductive or birthing materials and what restrictions apply to this dog.

What UK case figures do—and do not—show
UK owner guidance published on 26 September 2023 reported three diagnoses before 2020 and 97 diagnoses from 2023 through June. The guidance said cases were mainly in dogs imported from Eastern Europe or linked to such dogs. These are historical UK counts, not a current prevalence estimate for the UK or elsewhere; local public health and veterinary advice is more relevant to an individual puppy.
