Elective declawing is not simply removing a cat’s claws: it amputates the last bone of each treated toe. To protect your cat and your furniture, start with suitable scratching surfaces, regular nail care, and humane behavior strategies. The ASPCA and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) oppose declawing as an elective procedure and recommend nonsurgical alternatives.

What declawing does to a cat

Declawing, or onychectomy, removes the claw along with the nail bed and the last bone in each treated toe—the third phalanx, or P3. It is an amputation, not a nail trim. The ASPCA’s position statement explains the anatomy and risks; the AAFP’s 2017 position statement also describes removal of P3.

The surgery requires anesthesia and can involve bleeding, infection, acute pain, and other complications. In some cases, retained bone material or tissue damage may contribute to chronic pain or further problems. These are possible risks, not outcomes that occur in every cat.

Scratching is normal feline behavior. Cats use their claws to maintain them and remove worn sheaths, stretch and exercise, mark territory through visual and scent cues, and support climbing and movement. As the ASPCA puts it, “Cats rely on their claws as essential tools for both offense and defense.”

How to stop furniture scratching without declawing

Make an approved scratching spot more appealing than the furniture, then protect the furniture while your cat learns. Scratching structures, placement, and positive behavior strategies work together; no single post or pad is guaranteed to stop scratching.

  1. Offer a suitable scratching surface. Try a scratching post or pad, and place it near the furniture or area your cat already scratches. Cats may prefer different shapes or materials, so observe which options your cat uses.
  2. Encourage use of the approved spot. Use calm, positive behavior techniques to direct your cat toward the post or pad. Avoid treating normal scratching as misbehavior to punish; provide an acceptable outlet instead.
  3. Protect targeted furniture. The ASPCA mentions double-sided tape as a furniture deterrent. Pair protection with an appealing approved scratching site so your cat has somewhere appropriate to scratch.
  4. Keep claw tips blunt with regular trims. The ASPCA recommends routine nail trimming. Not every cat tolerates having its paws handled, so ask a veterinarian for guidance if trimming is difficult or stressful.

Alternatives to declawing at a glance

Option Best suited to Acceptance and upkeep Veterinary or behavior support
Scratching post or pad Giving scratching, stretching, and claw maintenance an approved outlet Your cat must use the surface; you may need to try different types or locations. Behavior guidance may help if your cat continues to target furniture.
Regular nail trims Blunting sharp claw tips Requires ongoing trimming; some cats resist paw handling. Ask your veterinarian for help if trimming is difficult.
Furniture deterrents, such as double-sided tape Protecting a frequently targeted furnishing Requires upkeep and works best alongside approved scratching surfaces. Consider behavior support if the scratching persists.
Temporary claw covers Temporarily covering claw tips They are temporary, need replacement, and may not suit every cat. Ask a veterinarian about fit and whether your cat will tolerate them.

When scratching remains a problem

If destructive scratching persists despite providing suitable outlets and protecting furniture, discuss the situation with your veterinarian. The ASPCA advises consulting trained behavior experts or seeking referral to an animal behaviorist. A professional can help assess the behavior and identify strategies suited to your cat; a particular result cannot be guaranteed.

Declawing should not be used as a behavioral remedy or preventive measure. The ASPCA says it has not been proven effective for other behavior issues. The AAFP also notes that declawed cats should be kept indoors or properly supervised outdoors because they have lost a primary means of defense.

Elective surgery and medical indications are different questions

The ASPCA and AAFP oppose declawing as an elective procedure. That position does not settle every individual medical case: if a veterinarian raises surgery for a specific medical reason, ask what condition is being treated, what alternatives exist, and what the expected benefits and risks are for your cat.
