Introduce cats gradually: keep the newcomer in a separate, fully equipped room, exchange scents before allowing sight, use a secure barrier for visual contact, and move to short supervised meetings only while both cats stay relaxed. If either cat shows stress, increase distance and return to an earlier step. Do not force a face-to-face meeting or let cats “fight it out.”
1. Set up a safe room and let the new cat settle
Choose a quiet room with a door that closes. Give the new cat food, water, a litter tray, bedding, toys, a scratching option and places to hide. Leave the carrier open if it can serve as a retreat. Keep the cats apart while the newcomer adjusts to the home; a move can itself cause fear or defensive behavior. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and the American Humane Society both recommend beginning with a separate room.
Spread essential resources around the home rather than making the cats compete for them. The Humane Society of the United States recommends at least one litter box per cat, plus one extra, as well as multiple food and water bowls, beds and other resources. Cats Protection recommends one of each essential item per cat plus an extra, placed in different locations. Humane Society of the United States factsheet; Cats Protection.
2. Exchange scents, then spaces
Once the new cat has had time to settle, let each cat investigate the other’s scent without meeting. Swap bedding, or gently wipe a soft cloth around one cat’s cheeks or forehead and place it where the other can explore it at its own pace. Repeat in both directions. Pair the scent with something pleasant, such as food, treats, play or attention, as long as both cats remain comfortable. American Humane Society; UC Davis; Cats Protection.

When they are relaxed with scent exchange, let each cat explore the other’s space in turn while keeping them physically separated. You can also offer meals on opposite sides of the closed door. Start far enough from the door that each cat can eat calmly; if either refuses food or becomes agitated, move the bowl farther away and try again later. Seattle Humane.
3. Let them see each other through a secure barrier
When both cats are calm around the other’s scent, introduce brief visual contact through a secure gate or partition that prevents them from reaching one another. Continue treats, meals or play if the cats can engage comfortably. A barrier must be high and secure enough that neither cat can jump over it, squeeze through it or knock it aside. Ordinary baby gates may be too low for cats and may need to be stacked, according to the American Humane Society.

4. Try short, supervised meetings
Move to direct contact only after both cats stay relaxed during barrier sessions. Choose a space with room to move, places to hide or climb, and clear retreat routes. Let the cats decide whether to approach; do not carry one toward the other or hold them face-to-face. Keep the first meetings brief, use play or treats to reward calm behavior, then separate them again. ASPCA; Cats Protection.

A hiss is a signal to give the cats more space, not an invitation to force an interaction. Hissing, growling, swatting, chasing, intense staring, agitation, avoidance or refusing food can mean the current step is too difficult. Calmly interrupt the session, use a barrier or separate rooms, and resume later at a stage where both cats can stay relaxed. Do not punish them or let them “fight it out”: the ASPCA warns that fighting can make the problem worse.

Stop and reassess rather than pressing ahead to meet a timetable. Some cats need repeated practice at one stage; a setback is a reason to slow down, not to force closer contact. An artificial pheromone diffuser is an optional measure that Cats Protection says may help combat stress, but it is not a replacement for separation and gradual introductions. Cats Protection.
How long does it take for cats to get along?
There is no reliable fixed timetable. UC Davis says introductions may take a few days to a few months; the Humane Society of the United States describes a range of days, weeks or months. Let the cats’ behavior—not a calendar—determine when to move on. UC Davis; Humane Society of the United States.

Success does not necessarily mean the cats become friends. They may learn to share a home peacefully without seeking each other out. If chronic stress or conflict cannot be resolved, permanent separation within the home or rehoming may be more humane; the ASPCA discusses these options for persistent aggression. ASPCA.
When to contact a veterinarian or behavior professional
Contact a veterinarian if a cat stops eating or has a sudden, unusual physical or behavioral change; behavior shifts can have medical causes. Seek veterinary advice if aggressive behaviors such as chasing, ambushing, hissing, swatting or biting persist, or if the introduction is not progressing. A qualified applied animal behaviorist or board-certified veterinary behaviorist may help with ongoing conflict. ASPCA; UC Davis.
