No—not if “honesty” means saying everything you know, immediately and without regard for relevance or impact. But pet professionals should communicate truthfully, clearly and without creating a misleading impression. Share the information an owner needs to understand a problem, make a choice or prepare for what comes next. Tact can make difficult news easier to hear; it should not hide a material fact.
What honesty means in a conversation with a pet owner
Honesty is more than avoiding a literal lie. A technically true statement can still mislead if it leaves out an important limitation, presents a guess as a fact or suggests certainty that you do not have. At the same time, honesty does not require reciting every detail, speculation or irrelevant possibility. The useful standard is accurate, relevant communication that lets the owner understand the decision in front of them.
The right level of detail depends on the situation, the owner’s needs, confidentiality commitments, any agreement in place and the duties that apply to the professional. Those duties differ across fields and locations. A standard for investment professionals or internal auditors is not a universal rule for veterinarians, groomers, trainers, boarding providers or other pet businesses.
How to be candid without overwhelming or misleading
Separate what you know from what you think
Make clear whether you are describing an observed fact, an estimate, a professional opinion or something you do not yet know. Explain any important limitation and, where useful, what new information could change your assessment. This is a practical way to make expert communication useful rather than treating disclosure as a checklist; ethical communication also involves judgment about what the recipient needs to understand and decide (Desmond, “The ethics of expert communication,” Bioethics, 2024).
#1 Best Overall
Put decision-relevant information first
Lead with what affects the owner’s choices, expectations, costs, risks or next steps. Then add supporting detail and invite questions. Giving every detail equal prominence can obscure the point the owner needs most; leaving out a material limitation can create a false impression. Aim for a clear account, not an information dump.
Use tact to improve delivery, not alter the facts
Respectful wording, a private setting and a pause for questions can help someone take in difficult information. They do not make it acceptable to soften a fact until it becomes inaccurate. The Institute of Internal Auditors’ 2024 standards—applicable to internal auditors, not pet professionals generally—call for communication that is “truthful, accurate, clear, open, and respectful” and emphasize telling the truth even when doing so is uncomfortable (Global Internal Audit Standards, Principle 1 and Standard 1.1).
How to handle difficult news
Difficult conversations can involve a tension between giving someone hope and helping them prepare, or between sharing information and respecting how they want to receive it. A 2026 qualitative study of 16 healthcare professionals found that participants’ views of honesty in difficult conversations were shaped by different understandings of care, patient autonomy, coping styles and values. It describes clinical professionals’ accounts; it is not a rule or a finding about pet-service businesses (Malfilâtre et al., “Honesty in Difficult Conversations: Insights From Healthcare Professionals,” European Journal of Social Psychology, 2026).
For a pet-owner conversation, a useful sequence is to state what is known, explain what remains uncertain, describe the available options and identify the next step or update. Give the owner room to ask questions and check that they have understood the important points. Do not promise an outcome that the evidence does not support. Where professional duties and the situation allow, adapt timing and detail to the owner’s needs without using kindness as a reason to mislead.

Why professional context matters
Some professions have explicit disclosure standards. For example, CFA Institute guidance for covered investment professionals says clients should understand the services they will and will not receive, their costs, the general investment process and significant limitations or risks. It also says relevant disclosures should be updated when services or costs change. These are investment-profession standards, not requirements that automatically govern pet businesses (CFA Institute, Standard V(B): Communication with Clients and Prospective Clients, updated January 2024).
Before deciding what to share, consider the actual professional role, applicable rules and agreements, confidentiality, and whether the information matters to the owner’s decision. If a duty is unclear, consult the relevant professional code or qualified adviser rather than assuming a standard from another field applies.

There is no general statistic in the cited sources showing how much honesty increases trust across client-facing professions. CFA Institute says full and fair disclosure builds trust in investment-client relationships, while a 2017 clinical guideline summarizes evidence that an intervention expressing competence, honesty and caring in video vignettes was associated with increased patient trust. That clinical finding does not establish a quantified effect for pet-owner conversations or client relationships generally (American Society of Clinical Oncology, Patient-Clinician Communication Consensus Guideline, 2017).
