Guinea pigs are social, vocal animals with continuously growing teeth, a distinctive jumping behavior, and a surprising dietary need: they must get vitamin C from food. These seven facts explain what makes them unusual—and why a few of those quirks matter to their care.

1. Guinea pigs are social animals

Guinea pigs generally benefit from living with a compatible guinea pig companion. Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service recommends keeping them with another guinea pig of the same sex, and UC Davis notes that guinea pigs housed together seek physical contact. Companionship still requires thoughtful introductions: not every pair will get along.

2. They cannot make their own vitamin C

Unlike some animals, guinea pigs cannot produce vitamin C themselves, so they need a dietary source. The Animal and Veterinary Service identifies vegetables or supplements as possible sources, while UC Davis recommends foods high in vitamin C. Ask a veterinarian how to meet an individual guinea pig’s needs rather than starting a supplement on your own.

3. Their teeth grow continuously

Guinea pigs’ teeth keep growing throughout their lives. Eating mostly grass hay helps wear them down, according to VCA. Agriculture Victoria gives a growth rate of 2 to 3 mm per week; that published figure is an agency estimate, not a measurement guaranteed for every tooth or animal.

4. They have a varied vocal repertoire

Guinea pigs make a broad range of sounds. UC Davis lists calls including chutters, whines, tweets, whistles, purrs, screams, squeals, chirps, and grunts. The variety is well documented, but a sound alone does not establish exactly what an individual animal is feeling.

5. They sometimes “popcorn”

Popcorning is a sudden jump straight up in the air. VCA associates the behavior with happiness in young guinea pigs, making it one of the species’ most recognizable antics. VCA’s description is an interpretation of the behavior, not a rule that every jump has the same cause.

6. Their front and back feet have different toe counts

Guinea pigs have four toes on each front foot and three on each back foot. It is a small anatomical detail, but one that makes their footprints a little less ordinary.

7. They rely more on hearing and smell than on eyesight

VCA describes guinea pigs’ eyesight as poor and their senses of smell and hearing as well developed. That contrast helps explain why their world is not experienced in quite the same way as ours; exact hearing ranges or visual abilities are not needed to appreciate the difference.

What these facts mean for guinea pig care

Several of these curiosities point to everyday needs, not just trivia. Merck Veterinary Manual’s adult-diet guidance centers on high-quality grass hay, species-formulated grass-based pellets, and produce. Its housing guidance recommends a solid-floor enclosure and gives a minimum of 7.5 square feet for one guinea pig, with about 2–4 additional square feet per additional animal; those are Merck recommendations, not a universal legal standard.

The Animal and Veterinary Service also recommends adequate horizontal space, hiding places, comfortable bedding, and enrichment that supports normal foraging and chewing, along with regular veterinary health checks. Seek veterinary attention for concerning signs such as lethargy, not eating, abnormal breathing, unusual or absent droppings or urine, bloating, head tilt or shaking, lameness, or overgrown teeth or nails.
