Noel Fitzpatrick’s Dogs and Their Humans: Stories of Healing and Hope from the Supervet’s Surgery brings together veterinary case stories and reflections on the bonds between dogs and people. In her June 12, 2025 review for Best Friends Animal Society, Sally Rosenthal describes it as a warmhearted collection that can be read a chapter at a time.

What the book is about

Fitzpatrick, known as the “Supervet,” recounts cases from his veterinary practice alongside reflections on what dogs mean to the people who care for them. The stories include dogs facing serious difficulties, the veterinary care they receive, and questions of recovery and quality of life. The book also explores how a dog’s illness or presence intersects with human lives.

Rosenthal’s review mentions Fitzpatrick’s late dog Keira and clients including a young boy on the autism spectrum, a Ukrainian refugee family, a man struggling with addiction, and a couple who cannot communicate. Simon & Schuster UK’s publisher description similarly presents the cases as stories from Fitzpatrick’s referral hospital and frames the collection as a celebration of human-dog connection. It names dogs including Thor, a Pyrenean Mountain Dog, and Bertie, a Pomeranian.

What Sally Rosenthal thinks

Rosenthal’s verdict is positive: she calls the collection warmhearted and praises Fitzpatrick’s sincerity and love of animals. She emphasizes the emotional bond between dogs and their guardians as much as the veterinary cases. That is one reviewer’s assessment, rather than evidence of a wider critical consensus.

Its episodic form is a practical strength for readers who prefer to dip in and out: Rosenthal says the chapters can be read individually. The publisher presents the stories as a broader reflection on relationships with dogs, so readers can expect both individual cases and a recurring focus on the role dogs play in people’s lives.

Who may enjoy it

  • Readers interested in veterinary case stories and the human side of caring for a seriously ill or injured dog.
  • Fans of Fitzpatrick who want stories from his practice and his perspective on the human-dog bond.
  • People who prefer a collection they can read one chapter at a time rather than a single continuous narrative.

The book is presented as a collection of stories, not as clinical guidance for treating dogs. Readers looking for practical veterinary instructions should consult a veterinarian rather than rely on a narrative account.
