Best overall: the iPrimio Stainless Steel Enclosed Litter Box, according to Cats.com’s comparison updated January 15, 2026. But buying one “best” box does not solve the basic multi-cat setup: the ASPCA recommends one litter box per cat, plus one extra. Choose boxes for each cat’s size and comfort, then spread them around the home so every cat can reach a clean, usable option.

The six picks below serve different needs, from containing kicked litter to reducing scooping. The recommendations and dimensions are reported by Cats.com; they are not independently verified here. Prices and availability can change, so check retailers before buying.

Can multiple cats share one litter box?

Cats may use the same box, but relying on a single shared box is not the recommended setup. The ASPCA advises providing one box for each cat and one additional box. Cats.com gives the same rule and recommends placing boxes in staggered locations, with one on each floor where practical.

More boxes give cats options and reduce the chance that one cat’s use or presence makes a box unavailable to another. A new box does not guarantee that a cat will stop avoiding the litter area: box count, cleanliness, size, and access can all be management factors, according to the ASPCA’s litter-box guidance.

#1 Best Overall
IRIS USA XX-Large Side Entry Cat Litter Box, Navy
  • GREAT SIZE FOR LARGE CATS: Dimensions: 30"L x 20"W x 14"H
  • XX-Large SIZE: Made for large and extra-large cat breeds like Maine Coons, Ragdolls, and Savannahs, this spacious litter box provides plenty of room for turning, digging, and stretching. It’s also a great choice for multi-cat households or older cats that need a little extra space.
  • EASY CLEAN: Designed with a smooth interior and minimal crevices, this litter box is easy to wipe down and maintain vs leading stainless steel litter boxes. The high walls help contain spills and litter scatter, reducing daily mess and keeping your cat’s area cleaner with less effort.
  • OPEN TOP: The open-top design encourages airflow and makes it easy to monitor your cat’s litter habits. It’s ideal for cats who dislike covered boxes and lets you know exactly when it’s time to scoop, helping maintain a fresher, cleaner space.
  • HIGH-SIDED WALL: The XXL cat litter box features tall 14" walls with a 6.5" curved entrance that offers privacy while keeping litter and urine contained. Ideal for diggers and high-spraying cats, the elevated sides help prevent messes outside the box and reduce cleanup around your home.

How to choose a litter box for a multi-cat home

Start with fit and access

A box that is too small or hard to enter can be a poor choice even if it contains mess well. Cats.com offers a sizing rule of thumb: choose a box at least as wide as the cat’s nose-to-tail-base length and about 1.5 times the cat’s body length. Treat this as that guide’s recommendation, not a universal clinical standard. The ASPCA also identifies undersized boxes and difficulty accessing a box as potential problems.

Consider the cat that needs the easiest access, not just the largest cat in the household. A high wall or hood may suit one cat and deter another. With multiple cats, a mix of box styles can help accommodate different preferences.

FURTIME Stainless Steel Litter Box with Lid, Enclosed Metal Cat Litter Box
  • 【Innovative Flip-Top Design】The stainless steel covered cat litter box features a flip door design, making cleaning simple and effortless. Easily open the lid to clean without removing the entire cover. With an easy-to-assemble 3-layer detachable shell, it offers both fully enclosed and semi-enclosed configurations.
  • 【Upgraded Leak-Proof Design】The three-layer structure of this metal cat litter box is tightly combined by an upgraded lock. Overlapping assembly seals urine inside the metal box, stopping leaks through gaps. Keep your home clean and odor-free, without worrying about the risk of urine leakage. Ideal for cats with high or frequent urination.
  • 【Front & Top Dual Entry】 The large cat litter box is designed with a top entrance and a front entrance to meet the needs of cats with all different personalities and physical conditions. Cats can choose to enter and exit the litter box from the front or the top. The filter pedal not only collects litter from cats' paws to keep the floor clean, but also makes it easier for older or short-legged cats to access the metal litter box.
  • 【Easy To Clean And Odorless】This stainless steel cat litter box is made of high-quality stainless steel and is extremely durable, reducing the need for frequent replacement. The fully enclosed setting prevents the spread of odors. It also features a deodorizing compartment for placing bamboo charcoal bags to absorb smells quickly. (Note: Change bags once every thirty days – Comes with 1 Pack) The stainless steel surface is smooth and non-stick, making it easy to clean.
  • 【Ample Space for Cats】Measuring 23 x 15 x 15 inches, this XL stainless steel litter box has plenty of room for cats of all sizes to move around freely and ensure they are comfortable during their potty breaks. The large litter box holds enough litter for an adult cat for 30 days. No need to worry about changing the litter when you leave home.

Balance containment against comfort

High sides can help contain litter and urine spray, while covered boxes may provide more enclosure. Neither feature is automatically better: the ASPCA notes that some cats may be uncomfortable with a hood or liner, and Cats.com raises access and territorial concerns with covered designs. Observe whether each cat enters, turns around, and exits comfortably.

Account for cleaning and floor space

Automatic and sifting designs change how waste is handled, but they still need a suitable location and ongoing attention. Cats.com notes the Litter-Robot 4’s high cost and substantial footprint. Manual pans take less space in some cases, but require routine scooping or cleaning. In a multi-cat home, ease of maintenance matters because the boxes are used frequently.

Six litter boxes for different multi-cat needs

The following options reflect Cats.com’s editorial categories. Product dimensions and features below are reported by that guide, which was last updated January 15, 2026. Its comparison describes firsthand testing, but those tests are not independently reproduced here.

Pick Reported size Access and cleaning Main trade-off
iPrimio Stainless Steel Enclosed Litter Box — overall 23.5 × 15.5 × 6 in Stainless pan with low sides; manual cleaning Heavy and relatively expensive
Frisco High-Sided Litter Box — mess containment 24 × 18 × 10 in Open top, tall sides, low entry Large footprint; litter may escape at the lowered entry
Litter-Robot 4 by Whisker — automatic cleaning 27 × 22 × 29.5 in Automatic cycling, app controls and monitoring, covered waste drawer High cost and substantial floor-space needs
Omega Paw Roll’N Clean — sifting About 23 × 20 in for the large version Roll the box to separate clumped litter into a waste drawer Seams may leak; domed cover may be uncomfortable for some cats
Frisco Open Top Cat Litter Box With Rim — budget 19.75 × 15.13 × 9.5 in Open top with removable rim; recycled BPA-free plastic May not fit large cats; rim may not lock firmly
Petphabet Covered Litter Box — covered preference About 25 × 19 × 17 in Translucent hood and large opening Some users report fragile latches; suitable only if cats tolerate a hood

Best overall: iPrimio Stainless Steel Enclosed Litter Box

Cats.com’s top overall pick is a stainless-steel pan with non-slip feet, a spacious interior, and low sides that may be easier for cats to step over than a tall-walled design. The guide describes it as easy to clean. Its trade-offs are weight and expense, and its 6-inch reported height may not contain as much kicked litter as a high-sided pan.

Tevila XL Enclosed Stainless Steel Litter Box with Lid,Black
  • 1.[JUMBO SIZE & XL CAPACITY] Our kitty litter box (23.6"x15.7"x15.7") allows big cats to turn and dig freely. The large 80L capacity can hold cat litter up to 40L for deeper burying and less refilling—ideal for multi-cat households.

  • 3.[3-IN-1 MODULAR & DOG PROOF DESIGN] Quick to assemble, 3 setup modes: fully enclosed litter box with lid,semi-covered,or open pan. Front entry top exit suits multi-cat needs. Lockable dog proof latch keeps curious dogs out, secures cat's privacy.
  • 4.[ODOR CONTROL & LEAK PROOF] This enclosed litter box with high sides features a carbon filter pack for strong odor control. The tall walls and seamless overlap stop urine leakage and splashes—specially designed for high-sprayers and messy diggers.
  • 5.[COMPLETE KIT & LESS TRACKING] Includes a step board for kittens or senior cats, a litter scoop with holder, a litter mat to catch scattered litter, 4 non‑slip pads for added stability. This all‑in‑one set keeps your home clean and tidy.

Best for containing mess: Frisco High-Sided Litter Box

The Frisco pan’s reported 10-inch sides are intended to help contain scattered litter and urine spray, while the lowered entry gives cats a way in. That entry also creates a point where litter can escape, and the 24 × 18-inch footprint needs substantial floor space. Consider whether the cat using it can comfortably step over the entry edge.

Best automatic option: Litter-Robot 4 by Whisker

The Litter-Robot 4 cycles automatically, with app controls and monitoring and a covered waste drawer, as described by Cats.com. The guide also mentions replacement parts and DIY installation guides. Its 27 × 22 × 29.5-inch reported dimensions and high purchase cost make it a larger commitment than a basic pan. Automatic cleaning changes the waste-handling routine; it does not replace having enough accessible boxes for the cats in the home.

Best sifting design: Omega Paw Roll’N Clean

To clean this box, roll it so clumped litter separates from clean litter and collects in a waste drawer. Cats.com reports that a large version is available and is roughly 23 × 20 inches. The guide flags possible leakage at the seams and notes that some cats may not like the domed cover. This design is most useful if the cat accepts its shape and the owner can manage the rolling motion.

Best budget pick: Frisco Open Top Cat Litter Box With Rim

This open-top pan has a removable rim and is made from recycled BPA-free plastic, according to Cats.com. Its reported dimensions are 19.75 × 15.13 × 9.5 inches. The modest size may be a poor fit for a large cat, and the guide says the rim may not lock firmly. Check the fit and rim stability before making it one of the home’s main boxes.

Best covered option: Petphabet Covered Litter Box

The Petphabet has a translucent hood, a large opening, and reported dimensions of about 25 × 19 × 17 inches. Cats.com notes reports of fragile latches. Choose it only if the cats using it are comfortable with covered boxes and can get in and out easily; a hood should not be treated as a universal solution to mess or odor.

How to set up boxes for several cats

  1. Count the cats and add one: provide one litter box per cat, plus one extra, following the ASPCA recommendation.
  2. Spread boxes around the home: Cats.com advises staggering locations and placing one on each floor where practical. Avoid making every box depend on access to the same spot.
  3. Match box dimensions to each cat: use Cats.com’s sizing rule as a starting point, then check whether each cat can enter, turn, dig, and exit comfortably.
  4. Keep boxes clean: the ASPCA identifies inadequate cleaning as one possible litter-box management issue. Choose a cleaning routine you can sustain for the number of boxes you have.
  5. Watch how each cat uses them: if a cat avoids a box, consider access, size, cleanliness, location, and whether the design feels comfortable rather than assuming a different product alone will fix the problem.
