Make a quiet, familiar indoor refuge before fireworks begin, keep pets securely inside, and reduce the noise and flashes they can hear and see. Dogs and cats can both be frightened by loud celebrations; if your pet’s fear is severe or recurring, talk with your veterinarian well before the event.
Recognize when your pet is distressed
Noise fear can show up as trembling, panting, drooling, pacing, vocalizing, hiding, digging at doors, or trying to escape. A frightened animal may bolt or injure itself while trying to get away, so treat escape prevention as part of the safety plan. Cornell’s guidance on fireworks and thunderstorm fear describes these reactions in dogs; the ASPCA also advises caregivers to protect pets during holiday festivities.
Prepare a safe refuge before the noise starts
Choose a familiar, sheltered room
Set up a quiet room away from windows, ideally with few or no windows, before guests arrive or fireworks begin. Put in a familiar bed or blankets, then close windows and doors to limit sound and flashes. Keep the room available throughout the event, even if there are visitors in the home. A crate is appropriate only if your pet is already comfortable using it; introducing one during a frightening event may add stress.
Secure the home and plan outdoor breaks
- Check doors, gates, and the yard for ways a frightened pet could escape. Make sure collar identification is current and microchip contact details are up to date.
- Exercise dogs and give them a bathroom break earlier in the day. If a dog must go outside after fireworks start, keep it on a leash—even in a fenced yard.
- Keep cats indoors and check on them during peak fireworks. Cats can also experience noise fear.
Cornell’s fireworks safety guidance recommends planning ahead and protecting pets from the noise and the risk of escape.

Reduce noise and offer familiar comfort
Once your pet is in the refuge, keep doors and windows shut and use music, television, or white noise to make outside sounds less prominent. Let your pet settle in its familiar bedding. You can offer a food-stuffable toy or chew if it is safe for that animal and the pet is interested; enrichment may occupy some pets, but it is not a treatment for severe fear. Do not punish hiding, barking, or other fearful behavior. Cornell cautions that punishment increases a dog’s distress.
An anxiety vest or calming wrap may help some animals, but it will not work for every pet. The ASPCA suggests a snug-fitting T-shirt as an alternative if you do not have a vest. Use clothing only if your pet tolerates it comfortably, and do not force it on an already distressed animal. The ASPCA’s Fourth of July anxiety guidance presents these as possible supports, not a guaranteed solution.

Keep pets away from fireworks and party hazards
If fireworks are being set off at home, keep pets well away from the launch area and secure fireworks until use. Do not let animals near debris; clean it up before allowing them back into the area. At gatherings, prevent access to hazardous foods, beverages, and other items. If you suspect your pet has eaten something toxic, contact a veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control. Contact your veterinarian in advance if your pet’s fear is severe, worsening, or difficult to manage with a quiet refuge and other environmental steps. Cornell advises discussing an event plan at least a week ahead. A veterinarian can assess whether medication, behavior modification, or referral to a veterinary behaviorist is appropriate.

If medication is prescribed
- Follow the veterinarian’s directions; never give more than the recommended amount or share medication between animals.
- Ask whether to try a practice dose before the event so you and your veterinarian can assess your pet’s response.
- Use medication only under veterinary direction. Do not choose or dose a drug based on another pet’s prescription or general advice online.
The ASPCA and Cornell recommend advance planning for pets that need medication. VCA explains that approaches such as systematic desensitization and counter-conditioning may be part of behavior treatment, with medication used under veterinary supervision.
