Pick a bird toy for your bird’s size and play style, then inspect every part—including fasteners and bells—for hazards. No toy is automatically safe just because it is sold for birds. Watch your bird try unfamiliar toys and remove anything that catches, breaks, or is used dangerously.
How do I know a bird toy is safe?
Start with what the toy is meant to do: encourage foraging, chewing, climbing, or manipulating objects. Match that activity to your bird’s size, beak strength, and behavior. A toy that suits one bird may be unsuitable for another, so judge the complete construction rather than relying on the product label. VCA’s parrot enrichment guidance and Best Friends Animal Society’s bird-toy guidance both emphasize safe, appropriate enrichment.
Inspect for entrapment and injury hazards
- Look for gaps or openings that could catch a foot, toe, beak, or head.
- Check for sharp points, cracks, splinters, and rough edges.
- Examine chains, loops, and cords for places where a bird could become tangled.
- Check whether pieces can be pulled off, swallowed, or broken into hazardous fragments.
- Inspect the entire toy, including clips, links, bells, and other attachment hardware—not just the part intended for play.
Check metals, bells, and materials
Metal parts deserve particular attention. VCA warns against soldered metal containing lead and galvanized, zinc-coated parts if a bird can ingest them. Best Friends also flags toxic metals and unsafe bell shapes. Avoid bells or fittings with openings that could trap a beak or toe, and do not assume a shiny finish identifies a safe metal.
Commonly discussed toy materials include stainless steel, natural non-toxic wood, acrylic, cardboard, vegetable-tanned leather, and cotton or sisal rope. Material alone does not guarantee safety: construction, size, and the bird’s way of using it all matter. Rope needs special care. If your bird unravels or shreds it, loose fibers can wrap around toes or legs; remove it when fibers become loose or long.

Use a practical comparison before buying
When comparing toys, consider the intended activity, fit for your bird’s size and beak strength, materials and hardware, entrapment or ingestion risks, and whether you can inspect and remove it easily as it wears. This is a safety-screening approach, not a tested ranking of toys.
What can I use for bird toys?
Depending on your bird and the toy’s construction, options include untreated wood, cardboard, safe natural branches, pinecones, sturdy acrylic, and appropriate chewable or foraging objects. Some toys use cotton or sisal rope, but avoid loose cords, long lengths, and loops; remove rope if your bird begins shredding or unraveling it. Avoid materials with unsafe dyes or treatments, and check every attachment point before offering a toy.

- Let a cautious bird approach gradually. VCA suggests beginning by placing an unfamiliar toy near the cage, then on the outside, and moving it closer over days or weeks if the bird remains comfortable.
- Observe play before leaving the bird alone with it. Best Friends recommends introducing a toy outside the cage and watching how the bird interacts with it.
- Remove it at the first sign of a snag or hazard. If it catches on a beak or toenail, or the bird uses it in a dangerous way, take it away.
- Recheck it as it wears. Remove damaged parts and any newly exposed sharp edges, splinters, loose fibers, or detachable pieces.
- Rotate toys for variety without crowding the cage. Leave enough room for the bird to move freely.
Adjust these general steps to your bird’s response. Ask an avian veterinarian about a specific safety concern or if you are unsure whether a material or toy is appropriate.
