Feed a potbellied pig a measured, complete ration formulated for mini or potbellied pigs, chosen for its life stage. Divide the daily amount into at least two meals, keep fresh water available at all times, and treat vegetables or fruit as limited extras—not substitutes for balanced feed. Ask a veterinarian to set portions for your pig and monitor its body condition.
Choose a complete mini-pig ration
The main diet should be commercial feed formulated as a complete ration for mini or potbellied pigs. These feeds are available in life-stage formulas and in pellet or crumble forms. Merck Veterinary Manual describes starter, grower, and maintenance rations; the California Veterinary Emergency Team at UC Davis recommends specific mini-pig chow and names Mazuri as a recommended brand. These are category recommendations, not a comparative product test.
Compare feeds by whether the product is a complete ration, whether its life-stage formula fits your pig, and what its feeding directions say. The right amount also depends on your pig’s health and body condition, so use the label as a starting point and discuss the ration with a veterinarian. UC Davis gives a protein range of 12–14% for mini pigs in its emergency-care feeding guidance, updated October 2024; that figure is not a complete diet prescription and does not replace the feed label or veterinary advice. Match the feed to your pig’s life stage
Life-stage formulations are not interchangeable by default. Texas A&M guidance says young pigs should receive youth mini-pig feed until around two years of age, then adult or senior food. That age is an approximate marker, not an automatic switch date; ask your veterinarian when and how to transition your individual pig. Measure meals instead of feeding by guesswork
Potbellied pigs can gain excess weight, and a universal cup or pound amount is not established for every pig. Follow the feed-bag directions as a starting point, then have a veterinarian tailor the daily ration to age, size, activity, health, reproductive status, and body condition. Merck advises dividing the recommended amount for the pig’s age and body weight into two or more meals; Texas A&M’s Pet Talk guidance recommends feeding twice daily according to the bag. Offer treats sparingly
Small amounts of selected vegetables and greens can provide variety without making treats the foundation of the diet. Merck lists green leafy vegetables, alfalfa, and green grasses as possible additions, and says apples and grapes may be offered in limited amounts. Texas A&M’s obesity guidance suggests watermelon, celery, leafy greens, and carrots as lower-calorie treat choices, while advising that starchy or sugary foods such as oatmeal or sweet fruit be avoided or very limited. Keep scraps, salt, and unsafe plants out of reach
Routine table scraps are a poor substitute for balanced mini-pig feed: they can provide inappropriate nutrition, add excess calories, or contain too much salt. This does not mean every human food is toxic, but salty foods should be kept away. Do not use salt blocks. UC Davis warns that salt toxicity can occur when pigs consume large amounts of salt, particularly if they lack free access to water or drink freely after a prolonged period without water. Keep water continuously available. If your pig has been deprived of water or may have eaten a large amount of salt, contact a veterinarian promptly rather than trying an improvised rehydration plan.
Potbellied pigs may root up or eat plants, so secure toxic house and garden plants as well as foods they should not reach. Use body condition and activity to guide feeding
Regular wellness examinations help catch weight gain before it becomes difficult to address. Texas A&M advises assessing body condition and notes that a pig should have a visible waistline when viewed from above, while also recognizing breed differences. Ask your veterinarian to assess your pig rather than relying on appearance alone, and build regular activity into its routine alongside portion control.
If weight loss is needed, have a veterinarian supervise the plan. In a November 11, 2021 Texas A&M article, clinical assistant professor Dr. Evelyn MacKay recommended gradual loss of no more than 0.5–1% of body weight per week.
