To rehome a pet with a medical condition, disability, or behavioral concern, first document the care the animal needs, then ask your veterinarian and local shelters or rescues about realistic placement options. You can consider a trusted personal contact, a rehoming platform, or shelter and rescue support—but the right route depends on the animal’s needs, the receiving caregiver’s capacity, and whether risks can be managed safely.
Start by defining what your pet needs
“Special needs” can mean very different things: ongoing medication, mobility or sensory support, a chronic illness, a behavior concern, or several needs at once. Before approaching a potential home, make a practical record of what caring for your pet involves.
- Veterinary records, diagnoses, and the veterinarian’s explanation of the condition and prognosis.
- Current medications, doses and schedule, diet, appointments, and any follow-up care.
- Mobility or sensory assistance, equipment, and changes needed at home.
- Daily routine, the animal’s preferences and strengths, and what helps them feel settled.
- Behavior history, known triggers, management strategies, and what has or has not helped.
Be clear about what is known and what remains uncertain. Do not promise a prognosis or level of improvement that your veterinarian has not established.
Get professional and local guidance early
Ask the treating veterinarian
Ask the veterinarian to explain the condition, likely care demands, and any important limits in terms a prospective caregiver can understand. You can also ask whether the clinic knows of local support or placement resources.

Get behavior help when needed
If behavior is part of the reason for rehoming, request an assessment or referral from a qualified behavior professional. A diagnosis or label alone is not enough for a new caregiver to manage risk; practical information about triggers and effective management matters. ASPCApro provides animal behavior pathway resources for shelter and rescue professionals.
Contact nearby shelters and rescues
Reach out even if surrender is not your first choice. Staff may explain local assistance, foster or transfer possibilities, or the organization’s intake process. Capacity and eligibility vary, and some shelters have waitlists or cannot accept every owner surrender. ASPCA’s shelter and rescue FAQ and NYC rehoming FAQ describe options; confirm current policies directly with organizations serving your area.

Choose a placement route that can meet the animal’s needs
There is no universally best route. Compare the options by care fit, availability, continuity of information, and transition support—not just by how quickly a placement might happen.
| Route | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Trusted personal network | A friend, neighbor, or other known contact may be able to provide continuity, but assess whether they can realistically manage the care and safety needs. |
| Direct rehoming platform | ASPCA lists services such as Adopt-a-Pet/Rehome and Home-Home among possible options. Check current availability and suitability directly; a platform does not guarantee a good match. |
| Shelter or rescue | Ask about intake eligibility, waitlists, treatment capacity, and whether the organization can advise, foster, or arrange a transfer. Availability varies by organization and location. |
| Foster or transfer pathway | These may be possible through a shelter or rescue when available and appropriate. Confirm who will provide care and ensure the receiving person or organization can meet the animal’s needs. |
ASPCA’s position statement on shelter responsibilities says placement decisions should account for medical and behavioral status, capacity to meet needs, likelihood of placement, and public safety. Some animals may be adoptable during or after treatment; transferring an animal to a facility unable to provide effective treatment is not a suitable solution.

Describe the pet honestly and screen for fit
Create a profile that gives a balanced, specific picture: include the animal’s personality and preferences as well as care requirements, limitations, and known concerns. Useful photos or video and a description of the ideal home can help people assess whether they may be a fit; see the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA’s Pet Help & Rehoming guidance.
Talk through the day-to-day reality with prospective caregivers: medication, appointments, assistance, follow-up, household fit, and any behavior management. For behavior concerns, share the history and strategies plainly. There is no single screening checklist that fits every animal, so focus on whether this particular caregiver understands and can provide the care involved.

Prepare the transition and pass on records
Give the receiving caregiver the veterinary records, medication instructions, routine, and individualized care and behavior guidance at the time of transfer. The Association of Shelter Veterinarians’ 2022 Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters, Second Edition state that an animal’s behavior record should accompany the animal at transfer, foster, or adoption.
Plan introductions to resident pets and children carefully. The ASV guidelines recommend safe, gradual, controlled introductions and guidance for adopters and foster caregivers. Share known risks and agree on a management plan rather than expecting the new household to discover problems on its own.

When rehoming may not be appropriate
A placement is only responsible if the animal’s needs can be met and foreseeable risks can be managed. Consider the animal’s medical and behavioral condition, treatment outlook, the receiving caregiver’s capacity, and public safety. If no feasible placement can provide necessary care or manage a serious risk, discuss the options with the veterinarian and local shelter or rescue rather than placing the animal in an unsuitable home.
This is general U.S.-oriented guidance, not a diagnosis or case-specific treatment plan. Local laws, shelter admission policies, and platform availability differ; verify requirements and current options in your area.
