Can AI Diagnose Your Pet or Tell You If It Needs Emergency Care?

AI can help you organize your pet’s symptoms, but it cannot diagnose or safely rule out an emergency. Know when to call a veterinarian and how teletriage differs from veterinary care.

No—don’t rely on AI to diagnose your pet or to rule out an emergency. An AI tool may help you organize symptoms and questions, but it cannot examine your animal or perform tests. If your pet could be in immediate danger, call your veterinarian or a local emergency veterinary hospital now. For possible poisoning, contact a veterinarian, emergency hospital, or poison-control service promptly.

Can ChatGPT tell you what’s wrong with your dog or cat?

It can offer general information and help you describe what you are seeing, but a text response is not a veterinary diagnosis. It may miss important context or be wrong, and it cannot examine your pet or run diagnostic tests. There is no AI accuracy figure established by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) materials cited here, so an AI answer should not be treated as a reliable way to identify a condition or decide that care can wait.

Even veterinary teletriage has a narrower role than diagnosis. The AVMA describes teletriage as an assessment of urgency based on an owner’s report of history and clinical signs, sometimes supplemented by photos or video; its definition states, “A diagnosis is not rendered.” AVMA Connected Care Providers List

Should you take your pet to an emergency vet?

If you think your pet may be in immediate danger, call your veterinarian or local emergency veterinary hospital rather than waiting for an AI response. The AVMA’s 2025 first-aid handout advises calling so the hospital can be ready when you arrive. First aid may help while you arrange care, but it is not a substitute for veterinary care. • Excessive panting or rapid, heavy breathing
  • Restlessness or anxiousness
  • Excessive drooling
  • Unsteadiness, weakness, or drowsiness
  • Abnormally colored gums or tongue
  • Confusion, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Collapse

For suspected heatstroke, the AVMA advises getting to a veterinary hospital promptly and beginning cooling measures. AVMA warm-weather pet safety guidance AVMA Pet First Aid (2025)

What to do for suspected poisoning or a seizure

Possible toxin exposure

Contact a veterinarian, local emergency veterinary hospital, or poison-control service promptly. Do not induce vomiting or give medication unless a veterinarian or poison-control center directs you to do so. The AVMA’s 2025 brochure lists ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435 and Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661; it notes that a fee may apply. Confirm contact details and fees directly because they can change. AVMA Pet First Aid (2025)

Seizure

While a seizure is happening, clear nearby hazards. Do not restrain your pet or put your hands near its mouth. If possible, time the episode and record it; after it stops, contact your veterinarian or a local emergency hospital. AVMA Pet First Aid (2025)

What veterinary telehealth can—and cannot—do

“Telehealth” covers different kinds of contact, and a service’s role matters. The AVMA says veterinary medical care requires a Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR) and that veterinary services should meet the same standard of care whether delivered in person or electronically. The rules that apply depend on jurisdiction. AVMA: Connected care—Telehealth in veterinary practice

  • General teleadvice: General information; it is not necessarily an assessment of your individual pet.
  • Teletriage: Helps assess urgency and whether immediate referral is needed, using reported history and signs, sometimes with photos or video. It does not render a diagnosis.
  • Telemedicine: Electronic veterinary care intended to improve a patient’s clinical health status. The AVMA provider-list document says it may be conducted only within an existing VCPR, except for emergency advice until the patient can be seen or transported to a veterinarian.
  • In-person veterinary care: Allows the veterinary team to examine your pet and determine whether tests or treatment are needed.

The provider-list document is informational, non-exhaustive, not an AVMA endorsement, and says its entries have not been independently verified. Do not assume a particular service is licensed, available, or appropriate where you live without checking its current terms and your jurisdiction’s rules. AVMA Connected Care Providers List

How AI can help without making the decision

When there is no apparent immediate danger and you are arranging veterinary advice, AI can help you make your observations easier to communicate. Use it to organize information—not to choose treatment, delay a call, or decide that an emergency is ruled out.

  • Write down when the signs began, whether they are changing, and what you observed.
  • Note relevant events, such as possible toxin exposure, and keep any packaging available to share with the veterinary team.
  • Ask AI to turn your notes into a concise list of questions for the veterinarian.
  • Share the observations directly with a veterinary professional, who can advise you on urgency and next steps.

Prepare before an emergency

Keep your veterinarian’s number and the contact details of a local emergency veterinary hospital somewhere easy to find. The AVMA recommends keeping basic first-aid supplies available; its checklist includes items such as a digital thermometer, gauze, bandaging materials, gloves, and towels. A kit supports preparedness but cannot diagnose an illness or replace professional care. AVMA Pet First Aid (2025)
