Start in a quiet room, build the behavior in small steps, and add distance or distractions only when your dog is succeeding at the easier version.
What “place” means
Choose one clear destination—a mat, dog bed, blanket, or towel—and decide what you want your dog to do there, such as lie down. The cue should send the dog to that spot; a separate word such as “free” or “release” tells the dog when the exercise is over. This makes “place” a positive alternative to being underfoot, not a punishment destination.
A portable bed or mat can make the behavior easier to practice in different locations, but a dedicated purchase is not required. AKC discusses using a portable bed or mat and keeping the spot rewarding in its guide to teaching a dog to go to their place.
Set up for a first practice
- Pick a comfortable surface that will not slide when your dog steps onto it. A nonslip dog training mat is one option; a bed, towel, or blanket can also work.
- Begin somewhere quiet, with small, favored treats ready.
- Choose a marker—a clicker or a consistent word such as “yes”—to identify the action you are rewarding.
- Keep sessions short, and take a break if your dog loses focus.
Best Friends Animal Society recommends a nonslip target and short sessions that follow the dog’s pace in its place-training guide. Treats and a clicker are training aids, not prerequisites.

Teach the behavior in small steps
- Let your dog notice the target. Put the surface nearby and wait. Mark and reward looking at, sniffing, or moving toward it.
- Reward stepping onto it. Mark and reward a paw on the surface, then gradually wait for more paws until your dog is standing on it. You can shape this by rewarding successive steps, or guide your dog with a treat and reward once they reach the target.
- Choose the final position. Decide whether your dog should sit or lie down on the spot. Once getting onto the surface is easy, cue or lure that position and reward while your dog is still on the target. If your dog is not ready for the whole movement, reward a smaller step toward it.
- Give the release cue. Say “free” or another chosen release word, then let your dog leave and reset. Use the release consistently so your dog learns that staying on the spot continues until the cue ends the exercise.
- Add the word “place.” When your dog is reliably moving to the surface—and, if that is part of your goal, assuming the chosen position—say “place” just before the action. Avoid repeating the word when your dog has not yet learned what it predicts.
For another way to reset between repetitions, Best Friends suggests marking and rewarding the step, then tossing a treat away so the dog can return and try again. AKC and VCA describe adding the verbal cue once the dog is already going to the target reliably; Best Friends introduces the cue after the dog consistently gets onto the mat and assumes the selected position. The shared principle is to connect the word to an action the dog is beginning to understand.
Build staying, distance, and distractions
First reward brief, successful stays. Gradually wait a little longer between rewards, then practice sending your dog from a short distance and taking a step away. Add distractions only after the simpler version is working.

AKC calls duration, distance, and distractions the “three Ds” and advises changing one at a time in its home-manners place-training lesson. For example, if your dog can stay on the mat while you stand nearby, try increasing the time before you also move farther away or introduce a new distraction.
If your dog leaves, hesitates, or seems confused, make the exercise easier and reward a step they can manage. VCA recommends returning to the last successful difficulty level when a pet hesitates or becomes confused in its guidance on preventing separation distress.

Practice for doorbells and visitors
Do not make the first test an exciting, full visitor arrival. Practice the place behavior on its own first, then introduce the door routine gradually. Best Friends suggests beginning with a helper ringing the bell without entering, and building toward entry and longer visits. ASPCA’s barking guidance likewise recommends teaching the spot, sit or down, and stay before adding movement toward the door and other distractions.
If your dog struggles, return to an easier version—such as a quiet room or a bell sound without a visitor entering—and reward the behavior your dog can perform. If visitor behavior creates a safety or handling challenge, ASPCA recommends seeking help from a Certified Professional Dog Trainer or Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist.
