Plan a rabbit spay or neuter with a veterinarian experienced in rabbit surgery. Do not impose the prolonged fasting commonly used for dogs and cats: rabbits should generally have food available unless their operating veterinarian gives specific instructions. Before booking, ask about the procedure, anesthesia and monitoring, pain relief, and follow-up. After surgery, offer food as directed and contact the clinic promptly if your rabbit stops eating, produces fewer or no droppings, seems unwell, or has a changing incision.
What spaying and neutering involve
Spaying a female rabbit
A spay, usually an ovariohysterectomy, removes the ovaries and uterine horns. It prevents pregnancy and, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual’s routine-care guidance, reviewed and updated July 2026, eliminates the risk of uterine cancer. Merck describes uterine cancer as common and often fatal in rabbits over three years old. VCA also notes that spaying minimizes the risk of ovarian, uterine, and mammary cancers and prevents pseudo-pregnancy in intact females (VCA Animal Hospitals, “Spaying in Rabbits”).
VCA describes the operation as being performed under general anesthesia through a midline abdominal incision. The veterinarian examines the rabbit before surgery and may recommend preoperative blood tests if they are useful for that individual.
Neutering a male rabbit
Neutering, or castration, removes the testicles. It prevents the rabbit from fathering litters and, according to Merck’s rabbit-management guidance, can reduce aggression and urine spraying. The operation also requires anesthesia and an individualized veterinary plan.

How old does a rabbit have to be for spay or neuter surgery?
There is no single age that suits every rabbit. The House Rabbit Society’s spaying and neutering guidance says females are usually sexually mature at about four months, while noting that many veterinarians prefer to wait until six months because surgery may be riskier in younger rabbits. For males, testicles usually descend at about 10–12 weeks, and neutering can be considered once they have descended (House Rabbit Society, “How Old for Spay or Neuter?”).
These are general reference points, not a prescription for your rabbit. Ask a rabbit-experienced veterinarian to assess age, size, development, and health and to recommend timing based on the clinic’s approach.

How to choose a rabbit-experienced veterinarian
Rabbit surgery and anesthesia call for a veterinary team familiar with rabbits. Experience matters because the team must plan not only the operation but also anesthesia, pain control, and recovery. No single anesthetic protocol or discharge arrangement applies to every clinic.
Before scheduling, ask the clinic:
- Who will perform the procedure, and how often do they perform rabbit spays or neuters?
- How will anesthesia and recovery be monitored?
- What pain medication will be provided, and what are the exact instructions for giving it?
- Is preoperative testing appropriate for this rabbit?
- Will the rabbit stay overnight, and what determines discharge?
- What signs require an immediate call, and who can you contact after hours?
- What is included in the written discharge instructions and follow-up plan?
Ask for an itemized estimate so you can compare what clinics include. The available guidance does not establish a universal cost or a single preferred surgical protocol.

Should you fast a rabbit before surgery?
Usually, no prolonged fast. Rabbits cannot vomit, and withholding food for the long period commonly used before dog or cat procedures is not appropriate advice to apply automatically. VCA says, “You must NOT fast your rabbit the night prior to surgery as is done with dogs and cats.” House Rabbit Society likewise advises keeping food available. Merck’s professional surgical guidance says fasting for longer than three hours is not required or recommended and describes a short one-to-two-hour exception to clear the mouth.
Keep your rabbit’s normal routine and diet unless the operating veterinarian gives rabbit-specific instructions. House Rabbit Society recommends offering the usual hay, pellets, water, and leafy greens and bringing familiar food—especially favorite greens—to the clinic. If the clinic gives preoperative directions, clarify any fasting instruction that seems intended for dogs or cats before following it.

What to expect after surgery
Food, droppings, and comfort
Ask the clinic when to offer food and what to do if your rabbit is reluctant to eat. Offer familiar hay, water, and usual foods as soon as the veterinarian permits. Follow the prescribed pain-control plan exactly; do not give human pain medicines or change a medication dose without veterinary direction.
Some rabbits may need overnight observation until they defecate independently. If a rabbit does not eat soon after surgery, a veterinarian may recommend assisted feeding by hand or syringe. VCA names Oxbow Critical Care as one example of a recovery food used in some cases; it is not necessary for every rabbit and does not replace veterinary assessment.

Set up a calm recovery area
Prepare a quiet, warm, clean space. Limit running, jumping, and rough play as the clinic directs, and check your rabbit daily for appetite, drinking, urination, droppings, behavior, and incision changes. A calm bonded partner may be able to stay with the recovering rabbit, but follow the veterinarian’s advice for your pair.
When to contact the veterinarian
VCA says eating, drinking, defecating, and urinating should occur within 12–24 hours; House Rabbit Society says eating should resume within 24 hours and fecal output return to normal in a day or two. These are general expectations from those sources, not a reason to wait if your rabbit seems unwell. Contact the clinic promptly for reduced or absent eating, slowed or absent droppings, weakness, a marked behavior change, or an incision that becomes red, swollen, or discharging. An opening or breakdown of the wound needs immediate veterinary attention, according to VCA.
Keeping a recently neutered male away from an unspayed female
A male may remain fertile for several weeks after neutering. House Rabbit Society advises waiting 30 days after surgery before introductions, allowing time for hormones to subside; its guidance notes that males may retain viable sperm for several weeks. Keep a recently neutered male away from an unspayed female for the period specified by the treating veterinarian, who can advise on the particular rabbit and circumstances.
What risks should you discuss?
Spaying and neutering require general anesthesia, and no anesthetic or surgical procedure is risk-free. VCA lists possible anesthetic reaction, internal bleeding, postoperative infection, and suture reaction or wound breakdown. The cited guidance does not provide a population-level complication rate suitable for quoting, so a precise percentage cannot be responsibly assigned here. Ask the veterinarian to explain the risks relevant to your rabbit’s health and how the clinic monitors and manages them.
