Rescued in New York City as Arancini, a social, chatty cat with a few medical needs, Barry found a home with Sueanny G., her boyfriend and their cat Hermione. Their story, shared by the ASPCA, follows his recovery and the time it took for the household to feel like a family.
From a New York City rescue to the ASPCA
In early 2024, Arancini was among 13 animals rescued from a New York City home, according to the ASPCA. The organization reported that some of the animals were emaciated and matted. Arancini was taken to the ASPCA Animal Recovery Center for care.
Staff found infections in both ears, fractured tips on both upper canine teeth and a kink in his tail. The ASPCA said the kink did not cause him discomfort. His ear infections were treated with topical medication.
While Arancini was legally considered seized, the ASPCA could not proceed with elective procedures. Director of veterinary services Dr. Karla Kovach explained: “During the period of time when animals are considered seized, we are unable to move forward with any elective medical procedures like neuter or dental, which he needed both,”

After his legal hold was lifted, Arancini was neutered and had both fractured teeth extracted. On the morning of the dental procedure, staff heard a heart murmur. The ASPCA reported that an echocardiogram found a physiologic murmur that was not associated with disease.
Why Sueanny and her boyfriend chose Arancini
Sueanny and her boyfriend came across Arancini on the ASPCA adoption website. His surprised expression caught their attention, as did his coat, which reminded them of Hermione, the cat already at home. They adopted him and gave him a new name: Barry.

For Sueanny, adopting again also meant confronting a worry about whether she could love another cat as much as her first. “I was so afraid of not being able to love another cat the way I loved my first one, but then I got him, and he changed everything,” she told the ASPCA.
Barry and Hermione take time to adjust
Hermione did not immediately welcome the newcomer. Sueanny said Hermione hissed and growled, and that she kept the cats in separate rooms for a while. Over time, the two cats warmed up to one another.

That is how this family described its own transition; the ASPCA story does not present it as a universal introduction plan. It records a gradual change in the household rather than an instant friendship.
The personality that emerged at home
The ASPCA described Barry as social, playful and chatty while he was receiving treatment. Sueanny said he became less jumpy and anxious as he settled into his new home. She also shared some of the small routines that made him part of the household: his antics around the litter box, singing along with her, and his attachment to her boyfriend.
