Choose a food labelled complete for kittens or complete for growth; that is the key check that it is intended to provide a kitten’s full daily diet. There isn’t enough comparable evidence here to rank eight UK products fairly, so this guide explains what to look for and gives a few verified examples without presenting them as winners.
What to look for in kitten food
Start with the wording on the pack: it should say the food is complete for kittens or for growth. UK Pet Food identifies this as the most important label check. A complementary food is not intended to be fed as the sole diet.
FEDIAF’s 2025 Nutritional Guidelines define complete pet food as food that, by reason of its composition, is sufficient for a daily ration. This is a technical definition, not a product endorsement or a ranking. Check the current pack for its life-stage wording and feeding directions.
- Life stage: Choose food designed for kittens, rather than assuming an adult product is suitable. Cats Protection says weaned kittens need specific, energy-dense kitten food; PDSA describes kittenhood as the first year and recommends food designed for kittens.
- Complete or complementary: Use complete food as the main diet. Treat complementary foods as additions, not a replacement for a complete diet.
- Format: Complete wet food, complete dry food, or a measured combination can work. There is no universal winner; preference varies.
- Practicality: Compare the pack’s feeding guide and portion instructions, and consider whether you can measure and provide the daily ration consistently.
Verified UK product examples
These examples illustrate different life-stage uses. They are not a ranked shortlist, and manufacturer descriptions establish what the company says about its own product—not that it is better than another food.

| Product | Stated use | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Royal Canin Kitten dry food | Royal Canin’s UK product page describes it as a complete feed for second-age kittens up to 12 months. | Confirm that the current pack’s age range and feeding guide fit your kitten. |
| Royal Canin Mother & Babycat | Royal Canin’s UK range page positions it for weaning. | Check the current pack label and age directions before use. |
| Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Kitten | The manufacturer describes this as a complete veterinary dietetic feed and advises seeking veterinary opinion before use. | This is not a routine pick for a healthy kitten; use it only with veterinary guidance. |
A sound eight-product comparison would need current labels and comparable UK availability and prices. Those details are not established for eight standard foods here, so a ranked “best” list would imply evidence that is not available.
Should you feed a kitten wet or dry food?
Either format, or a combination, may suit a kitten if the food is labelled complete and the portions are appropriate. Cats Protection says wet, dry or both can be offered according to preference when the food is complete. The available guidance does not establish one format as best for every kitten.

When mixing formats, account for both in the daily ration rather than feeding the full recommended amount of each. Follow the products’ own feeding directions, and ask a veterinary professional if your kitten has a health condition or a specific dietary requirement.
How much and how often should you feed a kitten?
Use the feeding guide on the food’s pack as your starting point. Measure the daily amount and divide it into meals. Young kittens need small portions at regular intervals; UK Pet Food says many can move to two meals a day by about six months. Your kitten’s needs and the pack’s directions should guide the routine.

How to change a kitten’s food
- When your kitten first comes home: If possible, continue the food it was already eating. PDSA recommends keeping that food at first.
- Once settled: If you decide to change foods, introduce the new food gradually rather than making a sudden switch. The British Veterinary Association also advises gradual changes for significant diet changes.
- Get advice if there is a concern: Speak to a veterinary professional about allergies, health conditions, special diets or uncertainty over what to feed.
What this guide can—and cannot—tell you
The label and feeding checks above can help you choose an appropriate complete kitten food. They do not identify a single best brand or prove that a “premium” label or ingredient order means superior nutrition. Product-to-product prices, availability and formulation comparisons are not established for a reliable eight-item UK ranking.
