Brush your dog’s teeth regularly—ideally every day—and arrange veterinary care for signs of oral disease. Home brushing and dental products can help control plaque, but they cannot diagnose or treat disease beneath the gums. A professional dental procedure may require anesthesia, dental X-rays, cleaning above and below the gumline, and treatment of damaged teeth.

What you can do at home

Brush regularly, starting gently

The most useful home-care habit is brushing. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) says daily brushing is best; brushing several times a week may also be effective. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush made for pets and toothpaste formulated for dogs, as recommended by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). Do not use human toothpaste.

Introduce brushing gradually and reward calm cooperation. Work toward brushing every day; if that is not manageable yet, several sessions a week are a practical starting point. Do not force brushing over painful or inflamed gums—ask your veterinarian for advice instead. The AVMA’s Pet Dental Care brochure and AAHA’s home oral hygiene guidance explain brushing and product selection.

Brushing helps remove plaque; it does not remove established tartar (calculus). Even consistent brushing does not replace veterinary examinations or dental treatment when needed.

Arm & Hammer Dog Toothpaste, Toothbrush, Tooth Brushing Kit, 2.5 Oz
  • COMPLETE DENTAL KIT INCLUDED: This dog toothbrush and toothpaste kit includes enzymatic chicken-flavored toothpaste, a dual-sided toothbrush, and a rubber finger toothbrush for a full at-home oral care system in one pack.
  • BAKING SODA DEEP CLEAN FORMULA: Dog toothpaste enzymatic formula with Arm & Hammer baking soda neutralizes bad breath at the source, breaks down odor-causing bacteria, and lifts plaque and debris from teeth and gumline for noticeable results.
  • CHICKEN FLAVOR DOGS ACCEPT WELL: The chicken-flavored enzymatic toothpaste for dogs encourages cooperation during brushing; if your dog is sensitive to flavor intensity, start with small amounts to build a consistent daily habit.
  • TARTAR CONTROL WITH DAILY USE: Consistent use of this enzymatic dog toothpaste actively breaks down tartar buildup along the gumline, helping reduce risk of gum disease and tooth decay when brushing becomes a regular routine.
  • TWO BRUSH STYLES FOR FIT: The kit pairs a dual-sided toothbrush for standard brushing with a finger toothbrush for dogs sized for small mouths and hard-to-reach spots, so you can match the tool to your dog's comfort and mouth size.

Choose supporting products carefully

Dental chews, certain diets, water additives, oral gels or sprays, toothpaste, and toothbrushes or wipes may support oral hygiene. Check the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) accepted-products directory for the exact product and the specific claim accepted. Listings cover different product types and claims, so acceptance should not be read as proof that a product treats every dental problem or replaces professional care. Ask your veterinarian whether a product is suitable for your dog’s size, health, and chewing habits.

Signs your dog needs a veterinary dental assessment

Arrange an examination if you notice any of the following:

  • Dropping food, difficulty eating, or a change in eating habits
  • Facial swelling

Dogs can conceal oral pain, so a lack of obvious behavior changes does not establish that the mouth is healthy. AAHA’s dental-care guidance describes warning signs and why an examination matters.

What a professional dental cleaning involves

A complete dental procedure is more than scraping visible tartar. A veterinary team may examine the mouth, use anesthesia with monitoring, take full-mouth dental radiographs, scale the teeth above and below the gumline, polish them, and probe around the teeth to assess periodontal health. If disease has damaged a tooth or its supporting structures, treatment may include extraction. The appropriate steps depend on the findings for that dog.

More than half of a tooth’s structure lies below the gumline and can be assessed only with dental radiographs, according to AAHA. A clean-looking visible surface therefore cannot rule out disease. AAHA outlines the essential steps of dental cleaning and therapy.

Why anesthesia is used

Anesthesia allows the veterinary team to examine and treat the whole mouth, including beneath the gums, while taking radiographs and scaling safely. Anesthesia-free scaling removes visible tartar but cannot provide the same complete assessment, radiographs, periodontal probing, or cleaning under the gumline. It can improve a tooth’s appearance without addressing disease hidden below the gums. Emily Singler, VMD, AAHA Veterinary Content Specialist, put it this way in AAHA’s February 22, 2024 article: “without anesthesia, there’s no way to fully assess and address your pet’s dental health.”

How often dogs need professional dental care

There is no single cleaning schedule that fits every dog. AAHA gives a general range of every one to two years for many pets, while small dogs, certain breeds, and dogs with individual risk factors may need cleanings more often. Your veterinarian can recommend timing based on examinations and your dog’s oral health.
