If the kittens look healthy and are not in danger, don’t take them yet. Watch from a distance, because their mother is probably close by. Step in sooner if they are injured, ill, cold, weak or in a hazardous spot. If the mother doesn’t come back and they really are orphaned, call a local shelter, rescue or veterinarian for foster guidance.
Step 1: Check for danger and distress
Look at the kittens before you decide anything. Contact a veterinarian or animal-welfare organization promptly if you see any of these:
- Visible injury or trouble breathing
- Cold ears, belly or paws, or pale gums
- Lethargy or weakness
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Heavily crusted eyes or nose
- Continuous crying together with a dirty, thin look
If the nest is exposed to an immediate hazard, such as traffic, flooding, construction or a dog, move the kittens a short distance to a safer spot. Keep it close enough that the mother can still find them.
Step 2: If they look healthy, watch from a distance
An unseen mother isn’t proof of abandonment. She may be finding food, or she may be waiting for you to leave. The ASPCA suggests checking again over a few hours. Best Friends Animal Society gives a 10–12 hour watch window for healthy kittens younger than eight weeks. These are guidance windows. They aren’t a reason to leave kittens in danger or distress.

- Watch from indoors or from a hidden spot so she feels safe returning.
- Keep people, dogs and other cats away from the nest.
- Don’t handle the kittens or bring them inside unless they are in danger or need care.
How to read the kittens’ condition
Condition gives clues, but it isn’t a diagnosis.

If the mother returns
She is usually the best caregiver, so help her without crowding the family.
- Provide food, water and a dry, clean shelter.
- Keep the area quiet.
- Contact a local community-cat program or rescue about a TNR/TNRM plan (trap-neuter-return, or trap-neuter-return-and-manage). That should happen once the kittens are old enough and the mother can be safely handled through the program.

If the kittens need care, contact a local shelter, rescue or veterinarian. Ask about:

Newborns need intensive, around-the-clock care, so get experienced guidance before you start. Best Friends notes that many shelters give foster caregivers supplies such as kitten milk replacer and bottles, so ask there first. Formula isn’t for kittens whose mother is looking after them.

Alley Cat Allies notes that newborns are helpless. They can’t stand, stay warm, eat or eliminate on their own. Hand-raised kittens under four weeks need stimulation to eliminate after each feeding. A veterinarian or experienced foster can estimate age and teach the routine.
Check whether they belong to someone
- Look for an ID tag.
- Ask a shelter, rescue or vet clinic to scan for a microchip.
- Post a photo and found details nearby.
- Check local law or shelter instructions, since found-animal reporting rules vary.
