Cats don’t share one wish list, but veterinary guidance points to a consistent core. Most want to feel safe and in control, to find their food, water, litter and resting spots without trouble, to scratch and hunt-play, and to deal with people who are predictable and who let the cat decide how much contact to have. The cat’s own response, not your intention, is the measure of whether you’re getting it right.
The short version, in the vets’ own words
The AAFP and ISFM Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines sum it up this way: “A cat thrives when we provide a safe haven, multiple and separate food, water, toileting and scratching/resting areas, opportunities for play and predatory behavior, and positive, consistent human–cat interactions.” The guidelines also include respect for cats’ sensory needs as part of the framework.
That framework dates to 2013. A 2025 position statement from the FelineVMA on indoor cats is newer context: it reports that many indoor cats do not have their essential environmental needs met. It presents the five pillars as a way to reduce distress, behavioral disorders and stress-related medical disease. So these are not luxuries. Unmet needs can show up as behavior or health problems.
1. A safe place and a say in what happens
Cats are territorial animals and do best with familiar surroundings, safe places and a sense of control. The 2022 AAFP/ISFM interaction guidelines extend this to social settings: cats need control, safety, choice and familiarity not only in their physical space but in how people deal with them.

Hiding is a coping strategy
Merck Veterinary Manual notes that hiding can help a cat cope with something stressful. A cat under the bed during a party is not being rude or defiant. Let it stay there, make sure it can reach food, water and litter without running a gauntlet, and don’t drag it out to be sociable. A carrier left out and accessible can serve as one more familiar hiding place.
What a safe haven looks like
- Somewhere the cat can retreat that other pets and children do not enter.
- A spot the cat can leave freely, with no cornering.
- Familiar scent and surroundings that are not constantly rearranged.
2. Resources that are easy to reach and not fought over
Food, water, litter, rest and scratching areas should all be available and easy to get to. Multiple, separated options reduce competition, which matters most in multi-cat homes. One cat blocking a corridor or guarding a single litter box can cut another cat off from what it needs.

Don’t assume that cats living together are friends. Merck’s guidance on cat social behavior cautions against treating housemates as preferred companions; give each cat its own options so that none has to share to get by.
3. A chance to hunt, even if it’s a feather on a stick
The guidelines describe play as an outlet for chasing, pouncing and catching. They recommend a wand or rod toy moved like flying or ground prey, with the cat allowed to catch it at the end. A hunt that never ends in a catch can be frustrating.

How to run a play session
- Move the toy away from the cat, along the floor or through the air, as prey would move, rather than dangling it in the cat’s face.
- Let the cat stalk, chase and pounce.
- Let it catch the toy so the sequence finishes.
- Rotate toys over time to reduce habituation.
- Afterward, put away strings and any small parts that could be swallowed.
Never use your hands or feet as toys. In a home with several cats, individual sessions can help, since cats may not enjoy or cope with the same pace.
Food as a hunt
The environmental guidelines also recommend food puzzles and other feeding devices that encourage active food acquisition. These can be bought or homemade. If you try one, check that it isn’t hard to clean and that your cat can get the food out without giving up in frustration.

Catnip
Merck reports that about 50–60% of cats respond to catnip. It’s a limited reference figure, not a promise for your cat, and not something a cat needs.

Scratching is normal behavior, and Merck says a cat needs suitable outlets. The useful question is what your cat already likes. Match the surface to its preferred material, shape and size, and consider stability and location too. A wobbly post in a back room will lose to the sofa arm in the living room.

These are selection criteria drawn from veterinary guidance, not results from product trials.
5. Company on the cat’s terms
Merck says positive interactions may include talking, petting, play, feeding and training, and states: “A positive emotional interaction between the human family and the cat depends on the cat’s perception of what is positive, not on what the human family deems positive.” You may intend a cuddle; the cat may experience restraint and loss of choice.
Let the cat steer
- Invite contact rather than imposing it, and let the cat approach, pause or leave.
- Watch the response and stop when the cat moves away.
- The AAFP/ISFM environmental guidelines report that cats prefer petting around the head, cheek and chin over the abdomen or other areas, but they also note that contact can provoke an adverse response. Treat that as a starting point, not a rule for every cat.
Skip the punishment
Merck warns that punishment such as spraying, scolding or hitting can damage the bond or trigger unwanted behavior. If something is going wrong, such as scratching furniture, change the environment and offer an alternative instead.
6. Predictability, and what a sudden change means
Friendly, consistent routines and interactions build familiarity. Equally important, if your cat’s behavior or social interaction changes suddenly, a veterinary check is warranted rather than writing it off as a personality quirk. A cat that stops greeting you or starts hiding more may be unwell.
A quick audit for your home
- Does every cat have at least one retreat it can reach without passing another cat?
- Are food, water and litter in separate spots, with more than one option?
- Is there a scratching surface that matches what the cat already uses, in a place it frequents?
- Does the cat get play that ends in a catch, and are toys rotated?
- Do you let the cat decide when petting starts and ends?
Wand toys, puzzle feeders and scratchers are tools for these needs, not requirements; a homemade puzzle or a surface your cat already likes can do the job. Evidence here comes from veterinary guidelines and reference material, so individual cats will vary. Your own cat’s behavior is the final test.
