If your bird shows a new or worsening change in appetite, activity, posture, droppings, breathing or alertness, call an avian veterinarian the same day. Birds often hide illness until they are quite sick, so a subtle change from your own bird’s normal is worth acting on. Breathing difficulty, marked weakness, poor responsiveness or being unable to perch is an emergency. Phone ahead to confirm the clinic treats birds.
Signs a bird may be sick
The Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) owner education lists several possible signs of illness: reduced appetite, reduced activity, sitting fluffed up, sleeping more, sneezing, yawning, regurgitating food and diarrhea. A separate AAV veterinary-care handout adds staying fluffed or keeping the eyes closed even when the bird is stimulated, trouble breathing, loss of voice, generalized weakness and lameness.
Treat these as examples, not a diagnostic checklist. Species, age and personality all change what is normal, and the same sign can have very different causes. The most useful comparison is your bird today against your bird last week.
Signs grouped by what you would notice
- Behavior and energy: less activity, more sleep, staying fluffed, eyes closed when it would normally react.
- Eating and droppings: eating less, regurgitating food, diarrhea or other changes in droppings.
- Breathing and voice: sneezing, yawning, labored breathing, losing its voice.
- Movement: generalized weakness, lameness, difficulty perching.
How fast to act
AAV’s illness guidance cautions owners not to wait until tomorrow to see whether the bird improves and not to delay calling. Call the avian vet when a concerning sign appears or an existing one worsens.

Treat as urgent
- Difficulty breathing
- Pronounced weakness or collapse-like behavior
- Poor responsiveness or severe lethargy
- Inability to perch
For these, describe the signs by phone and ask whether the bird should be seen right away. If your regular clinic is closed, confirm that the emergency clinic actually treats birds before you travel, because many general emergency hospitals do not routinely see them.
What to do while you arrange help
AAV’s guidance for an ill bird is to keep it warm and quiet, handle it as little as possible, and put food and water within easy reach. The handout gives 80–85°F (27–29°C) as the ideal ambient temperature for most sick birds. Heat sources can overheat a bird, and fumes or smoke can harm it, so watch the bird and ask the clinic for directions.

Do not do the following:
- Force food or liquid into a bird too weak to swallow.
- Give any drug or remedy that was not specifically prescribed for that bird.
- Use home care as a reason to postpone the call.
Routine care: yearly exams and new birds
AAV recommends that companion birds see a veterinarian at least once a year. Healthy-bird visits establish baseline weight and health information and can find problems an owner cannot see. A newly acquired bird should also be examined promptly, since serious or contagious disease may not be visible.
Tracking weight at home
An AAV veterinarian contributor describes weight loss as an early sign of disease and encourages home weigh-ins with a gram scale. A scale helps you notice change and give your vet useful numbers. It does not diagnose anything or replace an exam. Ask your veterinarian which weighing method is safe for your bird’s size and temperament, and how often to weigh.

Finding an avian vet before you need one
Do this while your bird is healthy. AAV’s Find-A-Vet directory is a good starting point, but a listing does not guarantee availability, so contact local clinics directly. Ask:
- Do staff regularly treat birds?
- How are after-hours emergencies handled, and by whom?
- Is there suitable space to hospitalize a bird?
- What are routine and urgent appointment wait times?
Write the after-hours answer next to your phone numbers, and keep a travel carrier ready.
