Fostering kittens is temporary home care while they grow, recover, get socialized or wait for adoption. How hard it is depends mostly on two things: the kittens’ age and their health. Some fosters are a safe room, regular meals, cleaning and playtime. Others, with orphaned newborns, mean round-the-clock bottle feeding, warmth management and fast calls to someone who knows what they’re doing. The organization placing the kittens sets the actual plan. A general article like this one can’t replace it.
How age and health change the work
Think of fostering as a spectrum. At one end are kittens already eating on their own. Their care centers on meals, a safe room, cleaning, monitoring and regular positive socialization (ASPCA and Best Friends foster guidance). At the other end are very young orphans, who need warmth, frequent formula feeding, weight checks, cleaning and quick access to knowledgeable help.
Kittens who eat independently
As kittens grow, the work shifts toward food, play, gentle handling, litter and cleaning routines, and getting them ready for adoption. You still watch their health closely, and the time involved still depends on their condition and the rescue’s expectations.

The same guide describes starting gruel at around four weeks. These are one organization’s protocols, not a universal prescription. A kitten’s age, condition and the instructions from your vet or rescue take priority.
Warmth
Best Friends says warmth is crucial for kittens under four weeks. It describes a covered heat source arranged so kittens can move away from it. Kitten Lady gives the same advice about leaving room to retreat from the warm area, and she recommends having veterinary support lined up beforehand. A 2014 Best Friends article quotes veterinarian Dr. Patti Patterson suggesting the room stay above roughly 75 degrees. That is dated, setup-specific advice, so defer to your current foster coordinator or vet.

Best Friends’ Kitten Fostering manual is blunt about one risk: “Do not attempt to feed a kitten who is chilled* because it can have serious health consequences.” A cold or barely responsive kitten needs urgent help from your coordinator or a vet before anything else.
I found kittens outside. What do I do?
Don’t assume they need rescuing. The ASPCA’s guidance, “I Found Kittens Outside, What Do I Do?”, puts it this way: “Removing kittens from their current environment may not always be the right answer as the mom cat could be nearby getting food (or hiding from you)—and no one can care for a kitten like their mom can!”

- Look before you act. Check whether the kittens look clean, plump and quiet. Watch from a distance if appropriate, so a returning mother isn’t scared off.
- Call a local shelter or rescue. Ask what they recommend for these kittens in your area.
- If they look ill or injured, the ASPCA says to bring them promptly to a shelter, rescue or veterinary clinic. Call first to confirm they can take them.
- Check for identification. Look for an ID tag or microchip, and follow your local found-animal reporting rules before placing kittens for adoption.
How much time do I need to spend with the kittens?
The honest answer is that it varies a lot. Neonates on a bottle schedule can take over your day and night. Weaned kittens need set daily blocks for feeding, cleaning, play and handling, plus more attention if they’re shy or unwell. Before you say yes, ask the organization:
- How old are the kittens, and what is their medical condition?
- How long is the placement expected to last, and what does a typical day involve?
- Who provides food, supplies and medications?
- Who handles vet appointments and transport?
- Who do I call in an emergency, and is there backup care if I’m unavailable?
- How does your adoption and socialization process work?
Programs differ. The ASPCA says its program supplies food, materials and support but notes that arrangements vary between shelters. Best Friends describes safe housing, socialization and transport as foster responsibilities in its program. Don’t assume every group covers every cost.

Setting up and supplies
What you need depends on the kittens’ age and your organization’s protocol. The care materials from Best Friends and Kitten Lady mention these items:
- Kitten milk replacer formula, with nursing bottles and nipples. These are needed for orphans, not for every foster kitten.
- A digital scale that measures in grams, for tracking weight.
- A safe, covered warming source for young kittens.
- A shallow litter pan with non-clumping litter.
- Cleaning supplies.
- Suitable kitten food for kittens who are eating.
Skip the incubator unless you’re told otherwise. Kitten Lady cautions that it is expensive and often unnecessary, and that the money may be better spent on timely medical care.

Monitoring and when to call
Best Friends recommends keeping a journal of weight, appetite, energy and general health. Report concerning changes promptly to your foster coordinator or veterinarian rather than waiting to see if they pass. For very young kittens in particular, things can change quickly, which is why having a contact before the kittens arrive matters.
Socialization, adoption and the goodbye
As kittens grow, play, gentle handling and positive exposure to people become the main work, and these prepare them for adoption. When the kittens go, you may feel attachment and sadness. That’s a normal possibility, not something every foster goes through.
