You can often reduce cat allergy symptoms without rehoming your cat, but no single step guarantees control. The approach that holds up best combines less exposure (especially a cat-free bedroom), regular cleaning, continuous HEPA air filtration, and a treatment plan matched to your symptoms by a clinician or allergist. This guide covers each piece, what the evidence does and doesn’t show, and when to get medical help.
What you’re actually reacting to
Cat allergy is not simply a reaction to hair. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI), the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) and Mayo Clinic, the triggers are proteins associated with the cat, including allergens in skin flakes and saliva. Cats can also carry pollen or dust on their coats, which may add to your symptoms.
Symptoms can include:
- Sneezing, a runny or stuffy nose
- Itchy or watery eyes
- Skin itching or hives
- In some people, asthma symptoms such as wheezing or difficulty breathing
Confirm the trigger first
Congestion and itchy eyes have many causes. Mayo Clinic describes skin testing and blood testing as ways to confirm a pet allergy, and the AAAAI recommends testing by an allergist/immunologist to identify the allergen and plan management. Knowing for certain that the cat is the trigger, and not dust mites or pollen, tells you whether the effort below is worth making.
Reduce exposure at home
Mayo Clinic states that “the first line of treatment for controlling pet allergy is avoiding the allergy-causing animal as much as possible.” If you’re keeping the cat, the goal becomes avoiding as much exposure as you realistically can.

Make the bedroom a cat-free zone
This is the most consistently recommended step (ACAAI, AAAAI). You spend hours there, so keep the door closed and don’t let the cat on the bed. Confining a cat to one room won’t keep allergens in that room, though, so don’t treat a single “cat room” as a complete solution.
Cut down on close contact
Limit hugging and kissing the cat, and wash your hands after petting or handling it (ACAAI, AAAAI).

Choose surfaces that don’t trap allergen
Where practical, swap carpeting and heavily upholstered furniture for hard, washable surfaces, and clean surfaces and fabrics regularly (Mayo Clinic, and the 2012 AAAAI/ACAAI practice parameter on furry animals). If replacing flooring isn’t realistic, frequent cleaning matters more.
Use HEPA air cleaning
ACAAI and Mayo Clinic suggest a HEPA room air cleaner run continuously, typically in the bedroom or main living area, to reduce airborne allergen. A HEPA-filter vacuum or a suitable HVAC filter may also help. Check that the unit is rated for your room size and be prepared to replace filters on schedule. The sources don’t establish that any particular brand or model works best.

Treat filtration as an add-on. The practice parameter notes that a measured drop in allergen doesn’t always translate into fewer symptoms.
Consider allergen-blocking bedding covers
Mattress and pillow covers can be one part of a combined bedroom plan. Don’t expect covers alone to control symptoms.

Think carefully about bathing the cat
ACAAI mentions bathing a cat at least weekly as a possible way to lower airborne allergen. The 2012 practice parameter summarizes one study in which weekly three-minute immersion baths for a month produced a mean 79% decrease in airborne allergen. That’s a single study’s result, not a promise of symptom relief. Many cats dislike baths, so ask your veterinarian whether and how to do it for your cat.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will a “hypoallergenic” cat help?
Probably not. ACAAI says: “All cats produce allergens; studies have not shown that cats can be hypoallergenic (meaning that they don’t cause allergy).” Coat length doesn’t make a cat allergy-free either, so be skeptical of breed marketing that promises otherwise.

Medical options
Treatment depends on which symptoms you have. Your clinician will choose what suits you, but the main categories described by Mayo Clinic, ACAAI and AAAAI are:
| Symptom | Option described by the sources |
|---|---|
| Nose (sneezing, runny, congested) | Antihistamines; nasal corticosteroids |
| Eyes (itchy, watery) | Antihistamine eye drops |
| Breathing (wheeze, tightness) | Asthma medicines prescribed by a clinician |
| Persistent symptoms despite home measures | Allergy shots (immunotherapy), discussed with an allergist |
Medicines treat symptoms and home measures reduce exposure, so the two work together rather than replacing each other.
When to get prompt medical advice
See a clinician soon if you have wheezing, significant difficulty breathing, or symptoms that are seriously disrupting your sleep (Mayo Clinic). Cat allergy can coexist with asthma, and uncontrolled breathing symptoms shouldn’t be managed by home measures alone.
Quick Recap
A practical order of attack
- Get tested to confirm the cat is a trigger.
- Make the bedroom cat-free and keep the cat off your bed today, since it costs nothing.
- Start regular cleaning and wash your hands after contact.
- Add a HEPA air cleaner, running continuously, in the bedroom or living room.
- Reduce carpet and upholstery over time, and consider allergen-blocking bedding covers.
- Work with an allergist on medication and, if needed, immunotherapy.
